Business Results Pre-intermediate Unit #3
Visitors
Traditionally Japanese companies have hired “freshmen” straight out of university and then employed them for life but times they are a changing. Now we see more and more people opting to change jobs and companies in order to move more quickly up the corporate ladder or simply to find a job they are more interested in. With this increase comes the need to interview for jobs. I have interviewed many people and I think I have a decent track record of hiring quality people.
In my experience one of the most informative parts of a job interview is not what answers I get from a candidate but what questions they ask me about the job or the company. These questions not only show me what they want to know they also show me how interested they are in the company and if they are forward thinking individuals. Let me show you what I mean.
Interviewer: Do you have any questions about the position?
Candidate: How many vacation and statutory holidays do we get per year?
This is a valid question but tend to think it shows where the candidates priorities lie. This is someone who puts life before the job. That is not a bad thing but I prefer them to ask this question at a later stage in the interview process.
So what questions do you ask?
I always ask about the customer or clients of the company. I think it is important to know what the type of client is because I can know what the work environment will be. If you are 55 years old and the target client consists of “teens” you may struggle to understand what your client is looking for.
Candidate: “Could you tell me about the clientele? Or “What is your client base?”
You can always ask questions that demonstrate that you have done your research into the company which I think will demonstrate your knowledge of the company.
Candidate: “I read on your website that you will open a new factory in Malaysia next Spring. What impact do you expect that to have on your sales in Asia?
You can also ask questions that reveal your level of knowledge in the position or industry.
Candidate: “Have you upgraded your servers with the latest version of...?”
As you can see they are many questions that you can and should ask in the interview or when visiting the office. These questions convey a great deal about your level of interest in the position. So what questions do you ask when you go to interviews? What about when you visit a clients office? Are you able to make small talk with insightful questions? If you can maybe you can find out which of your products or services they need before they realize they need them.

Pre-Intermediate Unit3
Activity
『The question game』
Question forms(How often...? When....? Is...?)
