自治体発行の英語版フリーペーパーで英語学習！

先日、通勤で使っている
東急線・大井町駅の改札口のすぐ脇に
英語のフリーペーパーのようなものが目に入ったので

さっそく手にとってみると
「City News SHINAGAWA」という題名がついていました。

Ｂ４くらいのサイズの一枚紙なのですが
よく見ると表の一面が英語表記で、

裏は中国語・韓国語・タガログ語（多分）の
３段構成になっていました。

中身を読むと、その回のトピックは
新型インフルエンザの予防接種についてで、

新型インフルエンザの基本的情報の後に
誰が優先的に予防接種を受けられるだとか、
予防接種を受けるための申込方法などの情報が
丁寧に書かれていました。

（裏面にも、基本的には同じことが
　簡略的に３言語で書かれているようでした）

最近の外国人人口の増加に対応して
品川区が発行しているもののようですが

おそらくこのようなフリーペーパーを発行している
自治体は増えてきていると思うので、

こういうものを利用して英語学習するのも
いいのではないかと思い
今日はこのブログで紹介させていただきました

ネタが旬ですし、また英語版は
ネイティブ向けということではなく、

中国語・韓国語・タガログ語以外を母国語に持つ
全ての外国人向けに書かれているため
あまり難しい表現も使われていませんのでおススメです！

みなさんも、通勤で利用する駅などを
見回してみてはいかがでしょう？

また自治体が発行しているもの以外でも、
以前このブログでご紹介した「メトロポリス」など
在日外国人向けのフリーペーパーは沢山あります。

アールブイ　RV（recreational vehicle）

With spring fast approaching, this is a heavy vacation time for many foreigners. Especially in the U.S. where there is such a strong automobile culture, many people take to the roads to get away from it all. One of the most popular ways to travel long distances is in an RV. An RV in Japanese might be an automobile like the pictures below.

In America, we don’t consider these cars RVs. We’d call the upper picture an SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) and the lower picture a Van or mini-van

An RV in the U.S. would probably be more similar to the picture below.

This, however, is not because there was a translation mistake, but rather because there is a culture and geographical difference between Japan and America.

In the U.S., it takes approximately 4 days to travel from the West coast to the East coast. If you add in time for sightseeing, it could take a few weeks. Living for a few weeks in an SUV or Van would be very uncomfortable. However, travelling across Japan is much shorter. Travelling in an SUV or Van wouldn’t be too much trouble.

In addition to the distance, there is a different understanding of the function of a recreational vehicle between Americans and Japanese. For Japanese, a recreational vehicle’s goal is to get the passengers to areas for recreation- like mountainous areas for hiking which require you to cross difficult terrain. In American culture, however, the vehicle should be part of the recreation.

Therefore, it should be comfortable and relaxing while you are travelling to a certain area. In Japan, an American RV wouldn’t work because its ability to travel is restricted while a Japanese RV in the U.S. wouldn’t work because it doesn’t have enough space to house travelers for long periods of time. Both meanings are easily understood by examining the background of the people. This word wasn’t so much ‘lost’ as it was ‘adapted’ in translation.

Business Idioms
Introduction

Idioms are one area of English study that are very confusing for students. I am frequently asked about certain idioms and asked to explain what they mean or where they originate. My answer more often than not is probably not very helpful but it is true; I am often unsure of some idioms and rarely do I know the origin. As a native speaker the ability to understand idioms in not so much about knowing the meaning or origin but the context that allows me to understand. Honestly while there are idioms that are quite common there are many that are unique to regions, countries and generations.

For example, when I was young my Mother would say a person was “full of old rope” which meant that the person was not telling the truth or was “pulling her leg”. In other words they were playing with her by saying something funny.

A: I am Canadian. I was born in an igloo and my first pet was a polar bear.
B: That is not true, you are full of old rope.

The funny thing is I have never heard this expression used by anyone else in all my years and all my travels. So if I were to use it even with other native speakers they would be confused. They may get the meaning because of the context I used it but it would seem strange to them.

This new series of blogs titled; Business Idioms is aimed at looking at some common business idioms and putting them into context. We will give example sentences as well as a sample conversation so that you can see the idiom in use.

Please keep in mind though that you may end up in a place where that particular idiom is not commonly used or may have been modified slightly. Don’t despair, the other person probably understands what you are trying to say. If you are the person who doesn’t understand the expression, don’t sweat it either, just mention that you haven’t heard that expression before and ask for an explanation.

就任後初めて行った今日のスピーチは、

Third, we need to export more of our goods. Because the more products we make and sell to other countries, the more jobs we support right here in America. So tonight, we set a new goal: We will double our exports over the next five years, an increase that will support two million jobs in America. To help meet this goal, we're launching a National Export Initiative that will help farmers and small businesses increase their exports, and reform export controls consistent with national security.

We have to seek new markets aggressively, just as our competitors are. If America sits on the sidelines while other nations sign trade deals, we will lose the chance to create jobs on our shores. But realizing those benefits also means enforcing those agreements so our trading partners play by the rules. And that's why we will continue to shape a Doha trade agreement that opens global markets, and why we will strengthen our trade relations in Asia and with key partners like South Korea, Panama, and Colombia.

ファイト（Good luck, Go get ‘em, Do your best, etc….）

As I’m sure is the case in Japanese, English has many different ways to verbally encourage those around you. ファイト is a Japanese word of encouragement derived from English that doesn’t hold the same meaning for native-English speakers. Some phrases that we would usually use are ‘Good luck! Go get ‘em! Go for the Gold!’ and so on. Though ‘Do your best!’ is often used as the translation for ファイト, it doesn’t hold the same feeling of excitement and is usually used more seriously when we don’t expect success. Here are some various phrases and the situations that you might use them:

1.Good luck! This word is often translated at 頑張ってor ファイト. If you have been working hard on a project for work and you are about to give a presentation to your boss about it so he can decide whether or not to proceed with your proposal, a coworker might say, ‘Good luck!’ Your response should be, ‘Thanks,’ or ‘Thank you.’

2.Go get ‘em! / Give ‘em hell! These phrases are very casual and are either used between close friends or from a boss to a subordinate. ‘em is a colloquial pronunciation of, ‘them.’ However, it would not be correct to say, ‘Go get them.’ It is necessary to use the short form. These phrases might be used if you are meeting with clients or potential business partners in order to make a deal. Your coworker might say, ‘Give ‘em hell,’ and your response might be, ‘I will,’ or ‘Will do.’ The meaning behind these phrases is for you to impress the people you are meeting.

3.Go for Gold! This phrase is similar to ‘Go get ‘em! The reference to gold doesn’t mean money. Actually, it is a reference to the Olympics where the gold medal is the highest award. In a situation similar to #2, a coworker might say, ‘Go for gold!’ You can respond many ways such as: ‘Okay!’ ‘Alright!’ ‘Will do!’ or ‘Wish me luck.’

カンニング（Cheating）

As with many Katakana words, カンニング is used in Japanese in a much more specific and seemingly unrelated manner than in English. The English equivalent of カンニング would be the word ‘cheating’. Cheating has a very negative connotation as カンニングdoes in Japanese.

However, cunning in English is generally a good quality.

A ‘cunning businessman’ is someone that you probably want working for your company. It means that they can ‘think outside the box’ and achieve their goals in a variety of ways. Though this can sometimes include cheating when you are talking about individuals known for bad things, we would usually think of cunning as a good quality to have. For example, Steve Jobs is usually considered a cunning businessman because of Apple’s unique marketing and products to combat the much larger company- Microsoft.

In a meaning closer to the Japanese usage, Bill Gates can be described as cunning for building his fortune and the giant company of Microsoft, though he engaged in shady activity against Apple and came under fire for creating a monopoly.

Someone who cheats can be cunning, but not every cunning person cheats in the English usage of the word.
