英文学者山内久明　ＶＳ　機械翻訳ツール

さて、昨日紹介した「英語達人列伝Ⅱ　かくも気高き、日本人の英語」の最終章。
山内久明氏についてもう一ネタ。幸福の科学には英語達人が多数おられますゆえ。

　英文学者山内久明氏の名前を専門分野から一般的に広めたのは、1994年ノーベル文学賞を受賞した大江健三郎氏の当時大変話題をよんだ受賞スピーチ、「あいまいな日本の私」、このスピーチの英訳を大江健三郎氏が、普段氏の文学作品を英訳している翻訳家でなく、山内久明氏にお願いしたことである。

「英語達人列伝Ⅱ」の中で著者の斎藤氏は、その一部を紹介している。
山内氏の英訳と原文の大江氏の日本語を紹介している。

　私は、最近驚異的に精度を高めている機械翻訳にも訳させてみた。日本語の原文を機械翻訳ツール(DeepL)にコピペして英訳させただけで、何も手をつけていない。一秒もかからず翻訳をやってのけた。

新生に向かう日本人をささえていたのは、民主主義と不戦の誓いであって、それが新しい日本人の根本のモラルでありました。しかもそのモラルを内包する個人と社会は、イノセントな、無傷のものではなく、アジアへの侵略者としての経験にしみをつけられていたのでした。
また広島、長崎の、人類がこうむった最初の核攻撃の死者たち、放射能障害を背負う生存者と二世たちが------それは日本人にとどまらず、朝鮮語を母国語とする多くの人びとをふくんでいますが------、われわれのモラルを問いかけているのでもありました。

しかし、機械翻訳ツールが、淡々と忠実に英訳するその精度の高さには驚愕する。ここ数年で飛躍的に精度が向上している。

同時に、山内氏の原文理解、英訳、共に高度な人間的作業に敬服する。

　機械翻訳ツールが、それこそ機械的に瞬時に英訳する能力は、これからもっともっと精度を高めていくだろう。

　山内氏の全人間的な全人格的な翻訳を忘れないでいたい。

ちなみに、大江健三郎氏と山内久明氏は、大学時代からの友人で、大江氏の1965年の著書「ヒロシマ・ノート」に山内氏が登場している。
～僕は大学でひとりの広島出身の友人をもっていたが、かれは四年間、ただ一度も、原爆についてかたることがなかった」と記されている。～
