Will fossil fuels such as oil and gas still be the world’s main source of energy in the coming decades?

Fossil fuels have caused several problems such as global warming and environmental pollution. However, we cannot stop utilizing them for the time being because of its economic efficiency, the product balance of the petrochemical industry and its great availability.

First of all, conventional fossil fuels are quite convenient in every situation of human activities. Major parts of industries are designed based on them, such as power generating plants and transportation like vehicles. As a result, they are so efficient that people cannot shift to alternative energy sources for a while.

Moreover, the product balance of petrochemicals is very crucial in terms of the stable supplies of daily necessities. A variety of petrochemical products such as plastic, asphalt and fuel like petrol and diesel are derived from crude oil. Reduction of fuel consumption would lead to the disruption of these products' balance and end up with the shortage of necessities.

Finally, the great availability of fuel fossils will continue to be attractive for many industries. Although some experts claim it will run out in the near future, this is not the case. New oil fields have still been found every year all over the world, and many of them are utilized economically.

For these reasons, I think fossil fuels are going to be the main source of energy for the time being.
