出会い
大学院に在学していたとき、中国からの留学生のB先輩という方がいました。今は、有名大学で先生をされていらっしゃいます。だいぶ前に、B先輩の推薦で、中国エリアの大学の同窓会のグループに入れていただきました。
それからしばらく経って、その同窓会の飲み会が東京で開催され、私は、それに参加させていただきました。そこで、中国から来られたZ先輩と初めてお会いし、不思議と意気投合しました。その時の感覚は言葉では説明できません。大学時代も校内のどこかですれ違っていたはずなのですが、その時はお互いを知りませんでした。
今では、Z先輩と公私両面で非常に懇意にさせていただいています。齡五十を超えているのに、まるで大学のゼミの仲間のような気分で、いつも楽しく飲み食いしたり、一緒に仕事をしたりしています。全く不思議としか言いようのないご縁なのです。。。
不思議な体験
まさしく、今年（2023年）の5月、私は実に不思議な体験をしました。それは、Z先輩の案件で中国の天津に行ったときのことです。
Z先輩は天津のとある高級住宅街にお住まいで、近所にお父様のお宅もありました。お父様は、中国のナショナルチームで活躍された有名なスポーツ選手兼コーチであり、すでに90歳近くになられますが、今でも現役で高校生たちにコーチをされています。
そのお祖父様の健康長寿の秘訣の一つなのでしょうか、お宅には、中国全土から選りすぐりの食材が届けられ、非常に有能なお手伝いさんが、絶品の料理を作ってくれます。私も、天津滞在中は、何度もお邪魔をして、美味しい料理を食べさせていただきました。どれも、忘れられない味です。
そのZ先輩のお父様と、雑談をしていたときのこと、私は、私の祖父が満洲にいた時の話をしました。その中で、祖父がいた地区について、聞いてみたところ、驚くべきことが分かったのです。
そこは、Z先輩のお父様のお父様、つまり、Z先輩のお祖父様が、警察署長をしていた地域でした。
Z先輩のお祖父様は、日本の警察学校に留学され、満洲国で警察署長をされていました。Z先輩が留学先を決めるときに、日本を強く薦めた方です。
私の祖父は、満洲国でダンスホールや自動車教習所（当時の車事情からして、今の教習所のイメージとは全く異なるものである。）など手広く商売をしていました。また、日中韓のトリリンガルで、日本軍の将校の通訳などもしていたそうです。祖父の生前のいくつかのエピソードの一つに、人助けを非常によくする人で、誤認逮捕された人を裏から出してあげるなどしていたという話があります。
当時の財界は地元の警察署長とも繋がりが当然あったようで、ダンスホールや自動車教習所であれば、許認可等を考えても、警察との関係は深いです。。。また、誤認逮捕された人を裏から出すというからには、警察署長との人間関係はかなり深いものであったと推察されます。。。しかも、Z先輩のお祖父様と私の祖父とはほんの数歳ほどしか離れていません。。。
かくして、今、私ととてもご縁の深いZ先輩は、祖父の代からの繋がりがあったことがほぼ確実であることが分かりました。
その事実を知って、このご縁は、祖父同士が繋げてくれたご縁だと思った瞬間、私は鳥肌が立ちました。。。
縁とは不思議なもの
当時、二人は何を思い、何を話していたのだでしょうか。。。今でも時々思いを馳せます。。。
人の縁というものは実に不可思議なものです。これからも、Z先輩とのご縁を、大切にし、次の世代にも繋げていきたいと思います。

When I was in graduate school, there was a Chinese exchange student named B-senpai. Senpai is the term used to refer to seniors in a school or university. He's currently a professor at a famous university. On the recommendation of B-senpai, I was invited to participate in a group of Chinese alumni association of my university a long time ago.
After a while, the drinking party for the class reunion was held in Tokyo, and I got the opportunity to join in. In the party, I met Z-senpai for the first time, who was visiting Japan from China, and I was pleasantly surprised by how well we got along. Words cannot express how I felt at the time. We may have passed each other on campus during our university days, but we didn't know one other at the time.
I now have a very close connection with Z-senpai, whether at work or in private. Even though I'm in my fifties, he made me feel like I am his classmate at seminar, and we always have a good time eating, drinking, and having fun together. This is also a curious turn of fate.
To be more specific, I had a miraculous experience in May of this year. That’s when I traveled to China for Z-senpai 's project in Tianjin.
Z-senpai resides in Tianjin's high-end residential district, and his father's home is also nearby. He is a well-known former Chinese national team player and coach. He is approaching 90 years old and continues to coach high school students.
The highest-quality ingredients were delivered from all around China to his grandfather's house, and the exquisite dishes were made by a competent servant. Perhaps this might be one of his grandfather's secrets to living a long and healthy life. I visited his home several times throughout my stay in Tianjin and ate a lot of great meals. All have an unforgettable taste.
During our talk, I told Z-senpai's father about my grandfather's experience in Manchuria. I learned something unexpected when I asked about my grandfather's region.
It was the neighborhood where Z-senpai's father's father was the police chief.
His grandfather attended the Japanese Police Academy and worked as the puppet Manchukuo's police commander. Z-senpai' father was the first to strongly advocate Japan while Z-senpai was deciding where to study abroad.
In Manchukuo, my grandfather had a variety of businesses, including dance halls and driving schools (considering the car situation at the time, the image of driving schools was very different from what it is today). He also speaks Japanese, Chinese, and Korean and is said to have served as a translator for Japanese military commanders. One of my grandfather's few flaws was that he was incredibly helpful and would bring people who had been wrongfully arrested out of the background.
At the time, businesses seemed to have links to the local police leader, and dance halls and driving schools had close ties to the police, including issuing permits and licenses... Furthermore, because he is out to apprehend persons who have been caught by mistake, it may be deduced that he has a very close personal relationship with the police head... Furthermore, Z-senpai's grandfather and my grandfather are just approximately a few years apart in age.
Thus, I am fairly sure that Z-senpai, who has a strong link with me, has a connection with my grandfather's generation as well.
Knowing this, I believed the bond was one that my grandpa and his grandfather had formed. It gave me goose pimples.
What were they thinking and discussing at the time? I still think about it from time to time.
Relationships are enigmatic. From now on, I will treasure my friendship with Z-Senpai and wish to pass it down to future generations.
