Utility companies worked nonstop Tuesday to restore power to tens of thousands of households slammed by the recent ice storm but had little to show for their efforts by mid-afternoon. Maine State Police said Timothy Woods, 50, of Knox, was found dead in his garage early Tuesday morning after he was exposed to carbon monoxide from a generator that was running inside.
Slow progress on restoring power meant many would be in the dark for Christmas and perhaps through the rest of the week.
As of 5:04 p.m. Tuesday, there were still more than 76,000 outages in Central Maine Power's distribution area. That was down from a peak of about 86,000 early Tuesday morning. Bangor Hydro Electric reported an additional 17,170 outages byearly Tuesday evening. Nationwide, hundreds of thousands were without power from Michigan to Maine on Christmas Eve. Tens of thousands of Canadians also have been affected.
CMP spokesman John Carroll said all of the company's available line crews, about 85, were in the field, in addition to an additional 92 crews from out-of-state companies and contract crews. Another 50 to 75 crews are expected later Tuesday, he said, along with 100 tree crews cutting limbs that have pulled down lines or are threatening to do so. "It's slow, meticulous work," Carroll said. "Trees and limbs need to be removed before line workers can repair the lines. There is an urgency, but we need these workers to be safe, too." As the day wore on Tuesday, crews were running out of crucial daylight hours where crews can work more efficiently. CMP hoped to have power restored to all its customers by Thursday night, Carroll said. More than three-quarters of all customers there, 18,444, were in the dark. Gov. Paul LePage reminded Mainers that the state of emergency declared on Saturday is still in effect, which means all available state resources will be used to assist affected communities. The Maine Emergency Management Agency has established temporary shelters and warming centers in some areas of the state: The Troy Howard Middle School in Belfast; Washington County Community College in Calais, the Brewer Auditorium, the Helen Thompson Elementary School in West Gardiner; the Winthrop Ambulance Base on Western Avenue; the Varney Community Center in Brooks; and the Stockton Springs Town Office.
State police are reminding motorists that many traffic lights are not working in the state because of the widespread power outages. The non-working lights are likely to become a larger safety issue after sunset. Motorists need to be extra cautious when driving through intersections that normally would be controlled by a traffic light.
