日本の「国際理解」に関して、「多文化共生」は、大きな柱となりました。私（にしゃんた）が来日したバブル期の約40年前は、「国際理解」は、基本的には日本人の外国旅行に伴う国際的な交流に焦点が当てられ、国内においては来日短期滞在者との交流が主流であった。
私も日本各地を訪れ、その変化を感じています。例えば、「国際交流会館」などが存在する各地域の活動内容も、設立当初と比べて大きく変わりました。割合が急速に拡大しています。
「国際理解」は言葉の表面では広大な世界を指しているもの、社会においては一は狭い範囲に留まっていて言えるでしょう。この点で、「国際理解」はもう私が40年前に来日した頃のように特定のグループのためのものではなく、例外なく全ての人々が参加する「当事者性学」となっている。ます。
このたび、公益財団法人明石文化国際創生財団の主催で「アスピア明石北館」にて開催される国際理解セミナー「多文化共生編」にて講師を務めさせていただきます。お近くにお住まいの方は、ぜひお越しください。

International Understanding Seminar: Multicultural Coexistence Edition – Embrace Differences, Transform into Strength! (Speaker: Dr. Nishantha) – Held in Akashi City!
In the context of “international understanding” in Japan, “multicultural coexistence” has become a significant pillar. Approximately 40 years ago, during the Bubble period when I (Nishanta) first arrived in Japan, “international understanding” primarily focused on the international interactions of Japanese people traveling abroad, with domestic exchanges centering around short-term visitors to Japan. However, the situation has undergone significant changes in this short span of time.
Having traveled to various parts of Japan, I’ve observed many changes. For instance, the activities of “international exchange centers” in different regions have evolved significantly compared to their initial establishment, with the proportion of “multicultural coexistence” in their activities experiencing a substantial increase.
While “international understanding” may convey a broad worldview in its literal sense, in society, it was once confined to a relatively narrow scope. Nevertheless, the progression of internationalization in society, particularly in terms of multicultural coexistence, has been remarkably swift. At this point, “international understanding” is no longer exclusive to a specific group, as it has transformed into a “discipline of involvement” for everyone, without exception, unlike the situation 40 years ago when I first arrived in Japan.

[Objective] We hope to deepen citizens’ understanding of multicultural coexistence by directly hearing from individuals well-versed in foreign languages, lifestyles, national characteristics, and cultures, with the aim of fostering interaction with foreign residents.
