今日はクリスマスの意外な由来を音声付でお届けしたいと思います。
オススメの取り組み方はまず音声を聞き、「こんな意味かなあ？」

Today I'd like to tell you about American's biggest holiday, Christmas.
Many people associate Christmas with the birth of Jesus Christ and
consider it a Christian holiday.
However, as with many holidays in America, the traditions associated with
Christmas began long before the birth of Christ, and came from many different
countries.
今日はアメリカ１の祝日であるクリスマスについてお話ししたいと思います。
多くの人がクリスマスをキリストの誕生と結び付け、キリスト教の祝日だとおもっています。
しかし、アメリカの多くの祝日と同様、クリスマスと関連づけられた伝統はいろいろな
国から持ち込まれ、キリストの誕生のずっと前から始まっていました。

It is said that Jesus was born on December 25th, and that when
the three Wise Men came to see him they brought him gifts,
such as incense and gold.
This is where Christians get the tradition of giving gifts on Christmas.
However, thousands of years before Christ was born, the Romans
celebrated with a festival to honor one of their gods, Saturn.
During this long festival they prepared large feasts, decorated their halls
and homes with wreaths and greenery, and visited friends and brought
them gifts.
As Christianity grew, they adopted these customs to reflect their beliefs.
キリストは12月25日に誕生し、3人の賢者が彼に会いにやってきてお香や金といった
贈り物をしたといわれています。
ここから、キリスト教徒たちがクリスマスに贈り物をするという伝統が始まったのです。
しかし、キリストが生まれる何千年も前、ローマ人は彼らが崇拝していた神の1人で
あるサターンを祝うお祭りをしていたのです。
この長く続く祭りの中で、彼ら（ローマ人）はごちそうを料理し、広間や家を花輪や
草木で飾り、友人を訪ねて贈り物をしました。
キリスト教が広まるにつれ、キリスト教徒たちはそれらの習慣を取り入れ、自分たちの
信念を反映させました。

Germans were the first to put Christmas trees inside their homes,
in the 17th century, as a symbol to welcome the coming spring.
Candles had traditionally been used to light the trees, but in 1882
the first Christmas tree lights were used to light a tree,
in the home of Edward Johnson, who had the lights specially made.
However, lights were still too expensive at that time, so usually only
stores used lights for displays, or in the windows outside.
Around 1930 people began to buy and use lights in their homes and on trees.
ドイツ人が17世紀に初めて、来るべき春の象徴として家の中にクリスマスツリーを
飾りました。
ろうそくは伝統的には木を照らすために使われていましたが、1882年に
エドワードジョンソンの家でクリスマスツリーのライトが使われました。
エドワードはクリスマスツリーのライトを特別に作らせました。
しかしライトはその当時、高価すぎたので、商店だけがディスプレイのため、
そしてウィンドウに使うだけでした。
1930年ころになって一般の人々が家やツリーの飾りのためにライトを使い始めました。

The beginnings of the idea of Santa Claus were brought to America by Dutch
settlers in the 17th century. In the 4th century there was a bishop in
what is now Turkey, who became a saint.
He was very rich, very generous, and loving towards children.
It is said that he used to give gifts to poor children by throwing them in windows,
or down chimneys. Eventually, the church made Nicholas a Saint.
The Dutch called him "Sinter Klaas" which meant Saint Nicholas.
サンタクロースの考えはオランダ人の入植者がアメリカに17世紀になってから
持ち込みました。4世紀に、今でいうトルコに司教がおり、彼はのちに聖人
になりました。
彼は大変お金持で、気前がよく、子供に愛情を注いでいました。
彼は貧しい子供たちに窓や煙突を使ってプレゼントをあげていました。
最終的には教会は（司教の）ニコラスを聖人にしました。
オランダ人たちは彼を「セインタークラアス」、つまり、ニコラス
聖人、と呼んでいました。

However, American children couldn't pronounce the name correctly,
and it eventually became Santa Claus.
Over time, several poets and writers contributed to the modern image of
Santa Claus, creating his reindeer, sleigh, costume, etc.
Nicholas died on Dec 6th, and many countries celebrated this day as a holiday.
When the Christian church grew, it is assumed they chose December as the day
for Christmas, partially based on this fact.
Historians now believe Christ was born in the spring, so the December
day for Christmas was probably chosen because so many people already saw it
as a religous holiday, due to Nicholas.
しかし、アメリカの子供たちはその名前を正しく発音できなかったので、
やがて「サンタクロース」になりました。
やがて、詩人や文筆家によってトナカイ、そり、コスチュームなどが
作り出され現代のサンタクロースのイメージが作りあげられました。
ニコラスは12月6日に亡くなりました。たくさんの国がこの日を祝日として
お祝いします。キリスト教会が勢力を伸ばすにつれ、このことから、
クリスマスは12月を選ぶだろう、という風に思われました。
歴史家はいまや、イエスキリストは春に生まれたと信じています。
なので、クリスマスを12月にしたのはおそらく、ニコラスのおかげで
たくさんの人が宗教的祝日だと認識していたためでしょう。

As you can see, Christmas has a complicated and misunderstood history.
In America, even for people who aren't Christian, or perhaps
aren't even religious, Christmas is still a special time of year.
It is a time for us to show kindness to our fellow man, our neighbors,
friends, and family. A time when everyone, even strangers on the street,
seem a little friendlier and happier.
これでお分かりのようにクリスマスの歴史というものは複雑で誤解されています。
アメリカでは、キリスト教徒でなくても、または宗教的な人でなくても
クリスマスの時期というのは特別な時期です。
この時期というのは我らが同胞、隣人、友人、家族に優しい気持ちをかけるときです。
みんなが、道端の他人でさえもが、いつもよりちょっと親切で、幸せな気持ちに
なる時期なのです。
