The 15th was a public holiday known as Marine Day and I went to check out an awesome festival in Shiogama (near Sendai in Miyagi Prefecture). Portable shrines are loaded aboard two special boats and some 100 fishing boats tail behind as the shrines are ferried around Matsushima Bay.

Decorated boats take part in the Shiogama Minato Matsuri near Matsushima in Miyagi Prefecture Monday to mark Marine Day. Omikoshi or portable shrines are loaded aboard two lavish boats as part of the festival, one of Japan’s big three boat festivals and marking the beginning of summer festivals in the Tohoku region. Some 100 fishing and cruise boats tailed behind as the shrines were ferried around Matsushima Bay before being being paraded through the streets of Shiogama and returned to their grounds.
Below pics were taken at the fish market in Kesennuma on July 7. I arrived a bit late (about 7am) but still managed to catch the below scenes. Some pics are sideways; if I figure out how to correct them I'll fix it.
