Sam Quinn still a sad sack, ev

Maybe you can't tell from his songs about people so afflicted with heartbreak and sorrow they could earn a sympathetic look from Job, but singer/songwriter Sam Quinn has a well-developed funny bone.

That may surprise some of Quinn's fans because, when he's not cracking jokes about his "very strong beard muscle," the former co-lead singer of the now-defunct Johnson City, Tenn.-based folk/rock band the everybodyfields is notorious for his ability to depress the pants off his listeners.

That lyrical trend continues on his upcoming solo debut, "The Fake That Sunk a Thousand Ships" (out Tuesday), but the now-beardless Quinn insists the weepy lyrics are actually all in good fun and necessary to his well-being.

"It's a very Asian concept; it's a good release," he said. Tiffany Charms "I don't talk about my feelings in a day-to-day situations.

"It all has to bubble out. Not that these are bold exorcisms of my problems in my life or anything, but it's what's going on (in my life)."

Quinn and his band, The Japan 10, will be driving down from Gucci Ring Knoxville on Saturday to take the stage at Barking Legs Theater as the start of a promotional tour for "The Fake."

The album was recorded last summer and marks the first material Quinn has released since the dissolution of the everybodyfields, which happened around the same time.

Although he's proud of his time with that band, Quinn said the 10 songs on "The Fake" -- which he called "a good, depressing little nugget" -- should help him firmly establish himself as a separate identity.

"I think I will have after this record push," he said. "I won't have to put 'of the everybodyfields' on there anymore to make an extra $15.

"I do look forward to not having that Michael Jackson, of the Jackson Five, thing going on."

WHAT'S NEXT

Even with the slightly pop-influenced 10-pack of songs on "The Fake That Sunk a Thousand Ships" freshly in the shrink wrap, Knoxville-based singer/songwriter Sam Quinn is already thinking about his sophomore release. Quinn started working on the as-yet-untitled project in North Carolina and said he is already half done.
