Golden Skate

0:10
hello everyone uh this is Judit for
0:12
Golden Skate and I'm very happy that I'm
0:14
here today with Stefan lambel Steph
0:18
thank you for taking time how are you
0:20
doing right now I'm doing good thank you
0:22
you did for taking the time to interview
0:24
me and um let's let's start with the
0:26
questions perfect so you're here at the
0:28
European championships with Dennis
0:30
vasilia with whom you've been working
0:32
for on for 7 and a half years how did
0:35
you approach this event with
0:37
him so
0:40
it's a a long time to to to be working
0:45
with someone and actually it has been
0:48
wonderful to
0:52
to work and
0:54
to get to know Dennis he's a wonderful
0:58
skater a wonderful person he has very
1:01
strong values that are very close to my
1:03
values so I think working with someone
1:07
that you get along and
1:08
that um you're able to connect well it's
1:13
it's a a treat and I I really admire his
1:18
uh ethic in works and
1:23
um yeah it's just a pleasure to see to
1:26
see what he's doing and um my job as a
1:30
coach is to make him as much autonomous
1:34
as possible and I feel he's getting
1:37
there so it's a big pride and um yeah
1:41
and I look forward to the next steps yes
1:44
so Dennis said this summer already that
1:46
these Europeans are very important for
1:48
him in the main focus of this event how
1:51
do you did you specifically prepare for
1:54
that that he's at his Peak at this point
1:56
of course uh I mean Dennis has always uh
2:00
um uh rather slow start in the season
2:04
and um and building up with the new
2:06
programs is uh important for him so he
2:11
get to enter into the character into the
2:14
Rhythm so it's for sure important to
2:17
build up the peak towards Europeans and
2:20
we still have Worlds at the end of the
2:22
season so
2:24
um yeah I think for sure Europeans are
2:28
super super important there is one more
2:31
competition uh after this one so um I
2:34
really want him to to keep the
2:37
motivation uh to keep the passion that
2:39
he has and
2:42
um and to believe in we saw yesterday in
2:46
the Paris event um work pays off and uh
2:52
that's really what skaters and a skater
2:56
like Dennis should should uh trust is
2:59
that uh of of course there are a lot of
3:02
talents in the in in figure skating but
3:05
when you when your talent is um
3:09
emphasized with the smart work it really
3:13
pays off yeah and uh it will pay off
3:16
either here or at a later Point yes
3:19
right so what do you wish for Dennis
3:22
like how with which feeling should leave
3:24
the event that he is happy or with a
3:28
certain
3:30
satisfaction for me I would like him to
3:34
to be able
3:35
to to perform with a how how do I
3:40
describe that like a free spirit M
3:46
um with a feeling of generosity in this
3:50
at the same time with the the Precision
3:52
that he's looking for
3:56
um
3:58
and I I just want people to to be able
4:01
to enjoy as much
4:03
as as um as he enjoys it I mean he is a
4:08
performer and
4:11
uh once he lets go that's where he
4:14
performs the best so that's what I wish
4:17
him Dennis is a very heavy thinker so we
4:21
also addressed this in the past that
4:23
sometimes he overthinks too much and
4:26
also this as this is such an important
4:28
event how do you prepare mentally or
4:31
like how did you approach this challenge
4:33
that he is thinking just so much it's I
4:37
mean we have uh of course we have a long
4:40
history and um we are we have a an
4:43
honest and open
4:46
uh relationship discussion so um I think
4:50
it's important not to be afraid to to
4:53
discuss things and uh even when there
4:55
are lot of thoughts um it's important to
5:00
sort them out and and keep the
5:03
essential so let's move on a little bit
5:06
to your other very successful you have
5:08
other successful students um and of
5:10
course you had a lot of recent success
5:12
with sha um how would you evaluate his
5:15
season up to this
5:17
point sha is incredible he is a
5:21
fantastic skater I I admire his um
5:27
determination um and also his uh working
5:32
ethics is just
5:34
unbelievable uh in both case Shan and
5:37
Dennis uh and even koshiro I mean those
5:41
those three uh men and athlet they have
5:45
shown
5:47
me like such a I don't know like a great
5:52
attitude towards work towards life and
5:55
at a young age they already um knew knew
5:59
what they wanted and uh I remember
6:02
myself being there and not knowing until
6:05
I was 25 and um so it's it's beautiful
6:09
to see how
6:11
how determined and at the same time much
6:16
more patient than I was back then so
6:19
yeah they are great great athletes and
6:22
uh and I I just see that sha has
6:26
something magical in him um
6:30
um the probably one of the highlight of
6:34
this season was uh at NHK when he saw I
6:38
was a little bit uh um how can I
6:42
say I was a bit off before he entered on
6:45
on on the ice like one minute before he
6:48
entered and he just looked at at me and
6:51
looked at the at Demi and he's just like
6:54
why like you look you look sad or
6:57
worried and then I I realized I need to
7:01
like get the right state of mind so and
7:04
then I just told him like then make me
7:06
happy and uh as soon as he finished the
7:09
program he just looked at me to to check
7:12
if I was happy so just the fact that
7:16
he's able to be so sensitive
7:19
to so many
7:21
things and at the same time be so
7:24
focused and Target what he wants and
7:27
then go for it and and be so active I
7:29
mean it's it's unbelievable he he's out
7:33
of this
7:34
world sha very often brings you up in
7:38
interviews uh like saying it kind of
7:41
relates to what you just said like uh he
7:43
wants to make you happy and wants to
7:45
please you and that he's happy when you
7:47
are happy how do you feel when you hear
7:50
something like that I mean for me it's
7:53
it's very important that we are happy
7:57
but um for me what is important is that
7:59
that he's actually doing what he wants
8:03
to do and um that he's being uh
8:09
also efficient it doesn't
8:13
matter uh how happy I am what matters is
8:17
that in the job he's efficient so that's
8:20
my goal and I I love to see that he's
8:25
focused that he's there and um yeah and
8:29
not we are not machines and not
8:33
everything works perfectly all the time
8:36
but at least there is this sense of
8:38
solidarity and um human Humanity which
8:42
is which is important even in in uh High
8:46
Level Sports where it it looks
8:49
like um we do things that are out of
8:53
this world but we are humans first yes
8:57
yes and um and for me this is this
9:01
is a priority is Health yes and the
9:06
humanity like it's life is so short yes
9:10
and we are just a little bit of dust for
9:13
a small time uh on this Earth so we need
9:17
to enjoy we need to share a moment
9:19
together and yeah and and we need to do
9:22
the best out of this
9:24
moment um you work with tra now also for
9:28
four years how would you say uh your
9:31
relationship coach student relationship
9:33
and communicated communication has
9:36
evolved over this time I mean I remember
9:38
2012 when I first saw him uh in insbrook
9:43
skating he was so small and I was so
9:47
high on on the on the audience St and
9:52
and but he was so powerful his presence
9:54
was like like a spotlight he was he was
9:57
really bright and and shiny
10:00
and um and then we met I was doing the
10:03
conference uh as as the athlete role
10:06
model for for the yog um for the ioc and
10:11
um and meeting with him afterwards even
10:14
though he had no idea what I was talking
10:18
about there was some kind of telepathy
10:21
between us and um and few months later I
10:24
was I was teaching uh in Japan um for
10:28
the National camps and uh and yeah there
10:32
was there was
10:33
something
10:35
connecting and this is is still there
10:37
and didn't really change or it evolved
10:41
because uh because he understood also uh
10:44
slowly understood a little bit more what
10:45
I was talking about and uh and I got to
10:50
to understand
10:52
also how he functions and to know his
10:55
routine to know uh what he prefers
10:59
yes and
11:01
um and yeah we we shared a few
11:05
experiences that helps us to know each
11:07
other better I just remember the moment
11:10
when you also skated together on the ice
11:12
it's also I mean all those experiences
11:15
from teaching uh as a consultant for the
11:17
Japanese Federation to the moment I was
11:21
coaching him we had a few experiences
11:24
like you said um skating together to the
11:27
the Four Seasons uh was also something
11:30
very special because uh we had to match
11:34
uh our skating and our Rhythm and our
11:37
patterns so it it was pretty uh unique
11:42
that moment of practicing together for
11:45
for that show um yeah so we had several
11:49
experiences where where we got to know
11:52
each other on different levels and uh
11:57
yeah yeah how would you characterize
12:01
your three longtime students Dennis
12:03
shakiro in a few words like three words
12:06
or the what adjectives come to your mind
12:08
maybe we start with
12:10
sha for sha I would say take your time
12:14
peace and peace
12:17
yeah acceleration it it's rather diverse
12:22
but peace and acceleration MH mhm what
12:26
about
12:27
koshiro and koshiro is
12:32
actor H act
12:34
like actor
12:37
and something with rhythm and quickness
12:40
like he has these quick
12:42
fibers that makes
12:45
him quite uh
12:48
rhythmical and uh as for Dennis
12:51
yeah
12:53
um something like
12:56
Majestic and honorable is there any
12:59
other skater or team that impressed you
13:03
recently and
13:06
why um I would say Gabby and Gom while
13:10
we were touring they really brought me
13:13
to uh uh state of emotions that uh that
13:20
I yeah felt was was a big impact for for
13:25
me um when they were skating to roses
13:28
there their show number yeah um that was
13:32
a moment that I really enjoyed on tour
13:35
going out and watching them
13:38
um I also really really admire Piper
13:41
Piper and Paul for several years I think
13:44
they've been uh
13:47
pushing themselves Beyond
13:51
expectations and I really like their
13:53
research and again the way they work the
13:57
way they put um things on the ice that
14:01
is not something that we we expect
14:06
um yesterday I was very impressed with
14:08
lucrea and Mato I was actually already
14:11
very impressed with the short program
14:13
and really loved their attitude
14:17
um and yeah and I mean knowing that Mato
14:21
has been a 10
14:22
Europeans uh it shows how patient but at
14:26
the same time determined he is and and
14:28
passionate about skating
14:30
so
14:32
um probably I can go on but I let's take
14:37
those three there that came to your mind
14:39
first um I heard that you in Shere Now
14:43
teach a lot young kids like L CH young
14:45
children uh that that's also something
14:48
very close to your heart is that correct
14:51
and like that you really enjoy doing
14:53
that like the like some kind of I've
14:55
done that since the first day and I've
14:58
been teaching I think the best way to
15:00
learn and to teach is actually to to
15:02
teach the kids yes um but yeah I I just
15:06
that there was like a new program that
15:07
you really try to get the kids into
15:10
skating we had this program before the
15:12
covid and during the covid we had to
15:14
stop uh and and we started again after
15:17
covid so it's something that we started
15:20
back way before back then and we just
15:23
had those uh two three years of Co times
15:27
where it was it was not possible to to
15:30
have them so and they're kids from the
15:32
valley and yeah and they're they're
15:36
super cute I mean I still think that's
15:39
something very remarkable that like a
15:40
coach who's who coaches the world
15:43
champion also really has a huge interest
15:46
in like giving the bringing the sport to
15:48
very young kids who probably can't even
15:51
skate backwards or like you have to
15:53
teach the very Basics so what makes that
15:56
uh so special to you where you want to
15:58
keep doing it I mean like I said for me
16:02
it doesn't matter what level I I'm not
16:05
looking for fame I'm not looking for
16:08
success is something so like it's it's
16:11
like a birthday it's your birthday and
16:12
next day is someone else birthday so I'm
16:15
not looking for I enjoy when it's my
16:18
birthday uh but I'm very happy when it's
16:21
uh someone else um but actually the work
16:24
to be on the fields and and to work and
16:28
to teach and to share and to see that
16:31
maybe the message is not clear for one
16:34
skater so then you need to make it
16:36
clearer and even when they're very very
16:39
young uh they they already have a
16:41
personality they already have a
16:43
character you already need to to observe
16:45
and to understand uh what's going on so
16:49
yeah it's it's a Life
16:53
Sharing moment uh and it doesn't matter
16:57
how how successful the skater is it's
17:02
it's really not about that uh so you've
17:05
been nominated as coach and
17:06
choreographer of the year now again um
17:10
also like it's remarkable I think to
17:12
yeah to be on the highest level in both
17:13
coaching and choreographing maybe uh
17:17
second last question um what uh does it
17:20
mean to you to be nominated by the IU
17:22
for that position and uh what is maybe
17:26
how do you balance coaching and
17:27
choreographing
17:29
I mean it's for me it's hard to to
17:34
manage time I because I love to work and
17:37
my motto is the more you do the more you
17:39
do so it really
17:42
um what what I do encourages me to do
17:47
more because I get inspired because I
17:49
get to see that okay I need to improve
17:52
get better uh help fix like it really
17:57
inspires me uh like for example this
18:00
summer we are doing the show in champi
18:02
and and a new project allows me to
18:06
develop some new ideas to create to
18:10
teach to coach so I think it's a a good
18:14
balance skating coaching choreographing
18:17
is right now in the moment that I am um
18:22
it's a balance that helps me to inspire
18:26
each uh each thing that I'm doing when I
18:29
skate I also get to feel what I'm doing
18:33
what I'm teaching uh and when I teach uh
18:38
I maybe want to try something and maybe
18:40
then when I do the run throughs with my
18:42
skater then I I understand okay I want
18:44
to maybe skate choreograph something
18:47
different for next season so it really
18:50
all comes to like belongs together I
18:52
think it's it's
18:54
um it really influences uh the whole
18:57
thing
18:58
but at the same time you really need to
19:02
in order to function you really need to
19:05
put the time sorry to put the time uh
19:08
for each thing so you're able to let go
19:12
of everything and to just enter into
19:14
that that world that you want to create
19:17
yeah and the like the ISU nomination
19:19
does that mean anything to you or is it
19:22
just like I said I'm I'm not looking for
19:26
any Fame it's it's um for what matters
19:31
is what the skater produce and um yes
19:35
okay and as a to finish this interview
19:38
what in 2024 as the year just started
19:41
what on or off the eyes are you
19:42
especially looking forward to or like
19:45
just to be able to perform and skate and
19:48
live my passion
19:51
with with my full heart thank you so
19:54
much it was a pleasure like always thank
19:57
you thank you very much
