Boston Red Sox right-handed pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka made a rehab start for the Portland Sea Dogs on Sunday afternoon against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Blue Jays) at MerchantsAuto.com Stadium in Manchester, New Hampshire. Matsuzaka took the loss as the Sea Dogs fell to the Fisher Cats 5-3.
Matsuzaka tossed two innings allowing five runs on four hits, with 3 walks and one strikeout. He threw 58 pitches, 38 for strikes.
The 28 year-old, Matsuzaka had a rough first inning allowing five runs on four hits and three walks including a lead off home run to Todd Donovan.
In the second inning, a different Matsuzaka appeared as he retired the side in order on nine pitches, eight for strikes. Matsuzaka retired the final five batters that he faced. He recorded his lone strikeout in the second throwing three straight strikes to Brad Emaus.
Despite the struggles in the first inning, Matsuzaka reported no physically problems.
Matsuzaka is the third Red Sox player to rehab with the Portland Sea Dogs this season joining John Smoltz and Jed Lowrie.
