Oswalt selected as U.S. starter against Japan

Astros ace bumped up to top spot in rotation

Astros ace Roy Oswalt is honored that Team USA has selected him to pitch Sunday night against Japan in a World Baseball Classic semifinal at Dodger Stadium.

After originally being lined up as the team’s No. 2 starter behind his good friend Jake Peavy, Oswalt has been moved up a spot so he can start with the chance to put Team USA in the final.

“It’s special,” Oswalt, who threw four scoreless innings against the Netherlands to stave off elimination Sunday, said via phone from Los Angeles. “I was thinking going into this round we were going to keep the same rotation where I was going to pitch the last game.”

Although Team USA manager Davey Johnson announced the move on Friday, Oswalt learned of the decision Thursday when Team USA pitching coach Marcel Lachemann visited his hotel room in Los Angeles to ask if he’d take the ball in the semifinal.

“They actually came to the room and asked me if it would bother me if I started the semifinal,” he said. “I think the main reason is because Peavy hasn’t thrown as many pitches as I have. I’ve come into spring training having thrown more pitches. It’s special. Not to take anything away from Jake. I think he can do the job as well as I could, but it’s special.

“They were hoping that maybe giving him one more game would help get his arm strength going and let him pitch the final game.”
