Amusing Findings from Ig Nobel Prizes By Amy Green
1 Have you ever heard of the “Ig Nobel Prizes”? Last month, I read several online news articles about them and found the articles very amusing.
2 The Ig Nobel Prizes were started by Marc Abrahams, the American editor of a humorous magazine about science, in 1991. The prizes are awarded annually for the ten greatest achievements that first make people laugh, and then think. The following are three examples of prize-winning research.
1. Do potato chips taste better if they sound crunchier?
(Nutrition Prize, 2008)
3 Italian and British researchers worked together to find out whether potato chips that sound better taste better. In their experiment, they asked volunteers to eat potato chips while wearing headphones. When the crunching sounds were made louder in the headphones, the chips were rated crisper and fresher than they really were.
