【TOEIC練習】secureの使い方

secureという単語、どういう意味を思い浮かべますか？
 
・〔情報の漏洩や盗聴などに対して〕機密がしっかりした、安全な
・〔攻撃や盗難に対して〕堅牢な、安全な、厳重に警備された
 
私はsecurityからイメージ出来るものだけでした。
 
なので、街でこんな看板をみた時に
『なんでここでsecureが使われるの！？』とビックリ
 
Do not secure bicycles to these railings.
They will be removed.

〔物を～に〕固定する、締め付ける
こんな意味があったのですね！！
『この柵に自転車を固定して停めないでください』という意味か自転車
 
 
↑ロンドンでこの看板で学んだこのsecureの使い方。
久しぶりにTOEICの勉強をしていた公式問題集にこの使い方が出ていてビックリ！
自転車が止まっていて、何かに固定されている写真。
Some bikes are secured to lampposts.
うぁぁーえ゛！キラキラきたぁぁーーえ゛！キラキラキラキラって思ったら、
lamppost（街灯柱）には固定されていなかったのでこの選択肢ではなかったですアセアセ
それにしても、やっぱりTOEICって実際に使われている
生きた英語が試験に出るんですね本

2021年1月27日付The Times紙19面にはこんな文章が書かれていました。
Black pupils gain places at Oxbridge with help from free project
A project that helps disadvantaged black pupils apply to Oxbridge has secured offers for more than 70 teenages this year.

Shermar Pryce, 18, who was born to Jamaican immigrant parents and grew up in south London, has an offer to study politics, philosophy and economics at Christ Church, Oxford. He said: "The programme demystified the application process for me, providing support in the form of invaluable assistance with all the stages of the admissions process for Oxford. Without its efforts, I wouldn't have had the confidence to apply nor the knowledge to successfully navigate the admissions process."
 
Naomi Kellman, one of the programme's founders, said: "In early 2020 I was concerned about the impact the pandemic would have on our students' ability to apply to university. I have been blown away by their hard work and resilience and am very pleased they have secured such success."

もう一度secureの意味を確認してみると

〔～を〕確実に手に入れる
こんな意味もあったのですね！！
 
引用が長くなったのは、Oxfordに受かった学生の一人、
Shermar君の言葉で仮定法過去完了が使われていて勉強になるな！と思ったので。
 
 
 
実はSecureの看板は２年近く前の写真チュー
なかなかブログにまとめる程の内容にならなかったので放置していました。
