【Strawberry Lane】
『The Journal of American Folk-Lore』には、
『Strawberry Lane』
・・・という歌が載っていました。
この歌のリフレインも、
「Every rose grows merry and fine」
・・・で、
ローズのリフレインです。
これは1914年に、
E. Russell Davisという人から
伝えられた歌のようで。
彼のおじいさんの
William Henry Banksが
歌っていた歌を、
彼と、彼のお母さんが
覚えていたようです。
おじいさんは、
メイン州の船主だったのだとか。

この歌の第１スタンザでは、
「ストロベリーの小道を歩いていたら、
私の本当の恋人になりたがっている
可愛くて美しい乙女に会う機会があった」
・・・なんて歌われていて
どことなく、
甘い感じのする歌詞に
なっていたりします。
ただそこには、
「fair maid」という言葉もあり。
このあたりにはやはり、
「名残り」が見えたりもします。
古い『妖精の騎士』の
バラッドの。
それから、
「finicle」
・・・という言葉なのですが。
意味がよく分かりません
アメリカの名字で
「Finicle」という名前は
あるようなのですが。
どう考えても、
違う気がします
「every stitch must be finicle work」
「すべての縫い目は、
finicle workでなければダメ」
・・・って。
肝心なところが、
分からない
これもまた、
古い言葉なのか。
それとも。
他の単語のタイプ・ミス
だったりするのでしょうか？

どこかロマンティックで、
キラキラした歌詞
スコットランドの
『妖精の騎士』のバラッドとは
違って。
こちらの歌の恋人たちの
未来は明るそうです。
「Blow, blow, blow winds blow」
・・・のようなリフレインが
よく使われていたスコットランド系の
歌では。
その根底になんとなく、
「不気味さ」とか「怖さ」
・・・のようなものが
漂っていました。
下手をしたら
魂をとられる。
異界に引き込まれる。
・・・みたいなことを
連想してしまう人も
いたくらいですから。
けれども。
ストロベリーの小道や
ローズのリフレインが
使われている歌からは。
そういう雰囲気は、
すっかり消えているように
感じます。
・・・と同時に。
そこにあった
「教訓」や「暗喩」も。
綺麗さっぱり
消え去ってしまったような

「ドルイド」
・・・と呼ばれる聖職者たちが
いたのだそうですが。
彼らにはそれぞれ
役割分担があり。
「バード」
・・・と呼ばれたドルイド僧たちは。

その教えを伝えたそうです。
のちの世の吟遊詩人は。
どちらかというと、
歴史とか事件の語り部のように
なっていましたが。
その元祖は、
ドルイドのバードだったのでは？

私は思っていたりします
歴史の中。
なんでもそうだったのですが。
最初は王や神官などの
一部の人たちの中だけで
扱われていたものが、
一般の世に大きく広がると。
それを扱うのは今度は、
民衆がメインになっていき。
そうすると「それ」は。
姿を変えるのです。
もともとは、
「真理」とか「法則」とか
「宇宙」とか「神」なんかを
扱っていたものが、
「地上の現実」に
根づいたものへと。
いにしえのバード達が伝えた
聖なる歌は。
聖職者から民衆の手に
渡ったとき、
バラッドに変わり。
そのバラッドが今では、
ポピュラー・ソングに
受け継がれている。
・・・みたいな。
そんな感じがします

Seamus EnnisがBBCのために
録音したもののようです。
歌っているThomas Moranは、
アイルランドの人で。
リートリム県の
モヒル在住だったようです。
そこは、
『The Tri-Coloured House』を
歌っていたマクドナー夫人の、
旅先の定住地のひとつでも
ありましたね。
「a Holland shirt 」という言葉が
使われているので。
もしかしたら、
古くからあった歌詞なのかも
しれません。
例えば、
アメリカ版の「Cape Ann」とか
「アイロンがけ」のような詩は。
明らかにアメリカ大陸で
生まれたものだと分かりますが。
「Strawberry Lane」
・・・という言葉は、
アメリカ以前にも。
もう既に存在していたのかも
しれませんね。
この歌では冒頭で、
「It's there you will meet a pretty young man」
「そこであなたは、
綺麗な青年に会うでしょう」
・・・と言っていて。
最初から最後まで
「Tell him」なので。
ある女性がずっと、
「その綺麗な青年に伝えて」
・・・と、
メッセンジャーに頼んでいる
という歌詞なんですね。
現在の『スカボロー・フェア』では。
男性が歌う時は全編通して、
「Tell her（彼女に伝えて）」
女性が歌う時は、
「Tell him（彼に伝えて）」
・・・と、
使い分けていることが
多いようですが。
そういうのは、
最近になってからできた
習慣なのでしょうか。
