【The Wind Hath Blown My Plaid Away】

バラッドの歴史は古く、

その中でも、
「オールド・バラッド」

（トラディショナル・バラッド）と
呼ばれているものは。

その成立は。
中世以前にまで遡れる。

・・・とのことでした。

その他に、

「ブロードサイド・バラッド」と
言われているものもあり。

これは。

16世紀以降。
印刷技術の発達により
出てきたもの。

ものすごくシンプルに
分類すれば。

「オールド・バラッド」は、
口伝で歌い継がれてきたもの。

「ブロードサイド・バラッド」は、
紙に印刷されて伝えられたもの。

アメリカの学者の、
チャイルドさんが見つけて
集めたものは。

「ブロードサイド・バラッド」

・・・が、大半のようなのですが。

その、

「ブロードサイド・バラッド」には、

完全に新しく創られた
バラッドばかりではなく。

古くから伝わってきていた

オールド・バラッドがあったり。

または、

そういったオールド・バラッドに
原型があるバラッドとか。

いろいろあったようなので。

このふたつを

完璧に分類する。

・・・ということは、

おそらく、

出来ないだろうと思います。

ブロードサイド・バラッドに。

『The Wind Hath Blown My Plaid Away』

・・・というものがありました。

これは、

ブラック・レターの

ブロードサイドに書かれた

バラッドで。

イギリスのバージョンでは、

記録されているものの中で

最も古いものと

言われているそうです。

20スタンザ（節）もある、

とても長いバラッドです。

このブロードサイドの

正確な出版日は分からないようですが。

ジョン・ピンカートンは、

1786年に出版した

『Ancient Scottish Poems』

（古代スコットランドの詩）

・・・の中で、

「この詩は、

1670年頃に印刷された」

・・・と、

主張しているようです。

ところで。

この

「ジョン・ピンカートン」って誰？

・・・と思ったので、

少し調べてみました。

ジョン・ピンカートン

（1758ー1826）

彼は、

エジンバラで生まれた

スコットランド人で。

古物収集家、地図製作者、作家、

貨幣学者、歴史家

・・・と、

ウィキにはいろいろと

肩書が並べられていましたが。

その中で私がすごく

気になったのが。

「ゲルマン人種優位性理論の

初期の提唱者であった」

・・・と書かれていた

ところでした

ウィキによると彼は。

祖国の歴史から

ケルト要素をすべて一掃したいと

強く望んでいたようで。

スコットランド人の祖先は

「ピクト人」だという理論を

展開したり、

ゲール人（ケルト系）の

ハイランダー達は、

堕落した詐欺種族であると

言い出したり

なんだかやたらと、

ケルトを否定したがった

人だったようです

バラッドに話を戻しますが。

このバラッドは、

チャイルド・バラッドの中で

『妖精の騎士』のヴァリエーションの

ひとつとして紹介されています。

「ヴァージョンA」

「sark」というのは、
スコットランドの
古い言葉だそうです。

「shirt」（シャツ）の

ことです。

ですので、

この歌はおそらく。

スコットランドから

流れてきた歌なのだろうと

推測することが出来ます。

また、詩の中でも。

「シャツ」のことを、
「sark」としているものは、
起源が古いもので。

「shirt」としているものは、
比較的新しく創られたもの

ではないのかと。

1670年頃に印刷されたという

この、

『The Wind Hath Blown My Plaid Away』

その中にもこの、
「sark」という言葉が見られるので。

これはやっぱり。

古くから歌い継がれてきた
「オールド・バラッド」の。

その、もともとの形に、
近いのかもしれない。

歌い始めは。

・・・と、繰り返すのですが。

このリフレインを使って

歌っている人がいました。
