Typhoon Haiyan
台風ハイアン
２０１３年に大きな台風ハイアンがフィリピンを
直撃したのを覚えていますか？
その台風は、フィリピン中部地方に上陸しました。
台風による高潮が原因で死者６１９０人、
行方不明者１７８５人 ケガなどは２８，６２６人
にのぼりました。
私はまた、台風が上陸している最中、
たくさんの人々が殺到したアストロドームへも足を運びました。
ワールド・ビジョン・フィリピンによると、
アストロドームの安全そうな上の観客席によじ登って
いる間、一階は冠水し溺死した人々がたくさんいたようです。
その状況を想像すると、どれだけの恐怖だっただろう・・・
と胸が痛みます。
Do you remember the super typhoon in 2013
named Haiyan?
It made landfall in the central Philippine island region.
Storm surges were primarily responsible for 6,190 dead,
1,785 missing and 28,626 injured in Haiyan’s aftermath.
I also visited the Astrodome where many people fled
during the storm.
According to World Vision Philippines,
the Astrodome was flooded by the storm surge
drowning several people,
while others desperately climbed
the bleachers to safety.
My heart aches imagining
just how frightened they must have been.

私は、レイテ島にあるタクロバン市から車で
おそよ一時間ほどのところにある
サマール島の小さな村へいきました。
私はとってもかわいらしい１１歳の女の子に出会いました。
名前は、ジョアンナ。
彼女の住む村も台風ハイアンの影響を受けました。
村にあるほとんどの家は、
強風にあおられ壊れてしまいました。
彼女の父は家族を連れて、近所の丈夫そうなお家へ逃げ込み、
子どもたちを机の下に避難させ、台風が過ぎ去るまで
そこで過ごしたと教えてくれました。
今現在その村の住居は、ワールドビジョンによって立て直され、
彼らは安心してそこで生活しています。
しかしながら、彼らの生活は、仕事がないため
とても苦しい状態です。
JOANA chan
I visited another small village in Samar Island
from Tacloban City in Leyte.
It took more than 1 hour by a car.
I met a cute girl who was 11 years old.
Her name is Joana.
The village where she lives was affected
by typhoon Haiyan.
Almost all of the houses in the village were damaged
by strong winds. Her father said he and his family
escaped to a neighbor's house and that
they had to take shelter under a table.
They remained there in total fear
until the typhoon past.
Now, all of the houses in the village have been rebuilt
by World Vision, allowing everyone there to live
in peace.
However, their life is still hard
because there is not enough work.
実は、ジョアンナのお母さんは、一番下の弟を出産したときに
亡くなってしまったんです。
それ以来、彼女はいつも“母”として
家族のお手伝いをしています。
野菜畑で収穫し、薪で火をおこし、それらを調理します。
また、家のそばの水の溜まり場で家族分のお洗濯をします。
彼女は、おうちのお手伝いをするのは好き、
特に、お洗濯！と教えてくれました。
でも実際、水の溜まりで家族全員分のお洋服を
ひとつひとつ手洗いするのは、とても大変なことです。
ジョアンナがとってもがんばっていることはよくわかります。
でも 私は正直、ジョアンナはやりたいことを
たくさん我慢しているに違いないので、とても心配になりました。
彼女はお勉強することが好きで、たくさんの人々を助けられる
お医者さんになりたいから、もっとお勉強したいんだ！
と教えてくれました。
私は子供たちのかわいい笑顔がたくさん見たい！
私たちがそのためにできること、ぜひ一緒に考えてくださいね。
すべての子どもたちが、たくさん勉強できる機会を持てる
ことを本当に願っています。
In fact, Joana’s mother died while giving birth
to Joana’s brother.
Joana always helps her family as if she were a mother.
She harvests vegetables and
even lights the fire to cook them.
She also washes her family’s clothes
in a puddle of water near her house.
She told me that she likes to help her family,
especially washing.
But it actually seems so hard
because she washes everything one by one, by hand.
I know she is doing her best for her family,
but seeing how she sacrifices everything
she wants to do in her life for her family,
I really worry about her.
She said she likes to study. She wants to study even more
because her dream is to be a doctor.
She hopes that she'll be able to help many people.
I seriously hope she and all of these children
can get the opportunity to study as much as they want!
I want to keep seeing their cute smiles!
