私の祖母は佐賀出身、母は鹿児島出身だけれど、
第二次世界大戦後に東京に疎開してきてしまったため、九州に親戚はいない。
しかし仕事等で九州を訪れる機会が多くなり、有田焼と接する機会も多くなった。
香蘭社の仕事をして、さらに井上萬二氏の孫・井上祐希氏と知り合ったことで、
遠く離れているのに、佐賀、そして有田焼への関心と愛が深まった。
人間国宝・井上萬二氏は佐賀県有田町出身の陶芸家。
1929年生まれ、今もまだ現役で活躍されている。
萬二氏の作品は、以前より東京の展示会などで目に触れる機会があり、
「白」の色出しとそのフォルムの美しさに一気に魅了されたものだった。
3月、井上萬二氏とディビッド・スタンリー・ヒューエット氏のコラボ展示会が
ニューヨーク・チェルシー地区の大西ギャラリーで開催された。
「白磁」と日本のミニマリズムの美しさを表現する萬二氏の作品と、
日本絵画、金箔装飾の影響を大いに受けたヒューエット氏の作品のキュレーションが見事な展示会に、たくさんのアメリカ人が訪れていた。
日本の伝統がこのように語られているシーンに出会うたびに、望郷の念が募る。
My grandmother is from Saga, and my mother is from Kagoshima, though,
I have no relatives in Kyushu because they were evacuated to Tokyo after World War II.
However, I have had many opportunities to visit Kyushu for work and have come into contact with Arita-yaki porcelain.
Through my work at Koransha and also through my acquaintance with Yuki Inoue, grandson of Manji Inoue, I have come to know Arita porcelain,
My interest in and love for Saga and Arita-yaki porcelain deepened, even though we are far apart.
Manji Inoue Manji, a living national treasure, is a potter from Arita in Saga Prefecture.
Born in 1929, he is still active today.
I have had the opportunity to see Manji's work at exhibitions in Tokyo for some time,
I was immediately attracted by the beauty of the "white" coloring and the form of his work.
In March, Manji Inoue and David Stanley Hewett held a collaborative exhibition at the Onishi Gallery in the Chelsea district of New York City.
Manji's work expresses the beauty of "white porcelain" and Japanese minimalism while
Hewett's work, greatly influenced by Japanese painting and gold leaf decoration, was beautifully curated and attracted many Americans.
Every time I encounter a scene in which Japanese traditions are discussed in this way, I feel a sense of nostalgia.
