ニューヨークで生活・仕事をしている日本語スピーカーの女性たちが集う
「JWN」(Japan Woman Network – New York)」というグループがある。
米国の金融業界の第一線で働くキャリア女性が立ち上げた組織だけに、
普段出会う機会のないような、錚々たるメンバーが参加している。
今年最初のゲストスピーカーは、ブロードウェー俳優として活躍する由水南さん。
彼女が初の書籍を出版したタイミングで、興味深いトークをお披露目された。
「Show up」という言葉は、航空会社勤務時代に最初に覚えた言い回しだった。
会社に行って、身支度を整えてから、「Show up」のマークをチェックする。
そこで初めて「出勤」とみなされて、緊張した勤務時間がスタートする。
由水南さんは、87回のオーディションを経て、88回目にようやく合格を手にされた。
そこからブロードウェイに立つまでは、さらに10年の年月を要したというけれど、
何事も「Show up」してみることで初めて、一歩先に進めるのだと。
加賀友禅の作家という御両親から学んだことは「好きなことへのこだわり」。
幼少時代から「好きなこと」「やりたいこと」が明確だった彼女を羨ましく思う。
様々な事情に縛られている日常が当たり前という私の環境では、
自分がなりたいイメージも、理想の姿も思い浮かべることができないけれど、
まずは「Show up」することから始めてみようかな。
可能性の扉を開けることを諦めないでと、背筋が伸びる思いのした時間だった。

JWN was founded by career women working at the forefront of the financial industry in the United States,
The participants are distinguished members whom I would not usually have the opportunity to meet.
This year's first guest speaker was Ms. Minami Yusui, a Broadway actor.
It was an exciting talk at the time of the publication of her first book.
"Show up" was the first phrase I learned while working for an airline.
After going to the office and getting ready for work, we check the "Show up" mark.
There, for the first time, we are considered "at work," and your tense workday begins.
Ms. Yusui Minami went through 87 auditions and finally received a pass on her 88th.
It took another ten years to get on Broadway, though
she insists you can only go one step further by "showing up" to everything.
She learned from her parents, who were Kaga Yuzen artists, "to be particular about what you love."
I envy her because she has a clear idea of what she likes and what she wants to do from her childhood.
In my environment, where various circumstances bind daily life, this is the norm,
I can neither imagine what I want to be nor what my ideal image is,
I should start by "showing up.
It was a time that made me think and not give up on opening the door to possibilities.
