米国で知り合った友人写真家が、銀座シックスで個展を開催しているという。
彼の活動を見る機会があまりないので、陣中見舞いのつもりで立ち寄ったら、
約３ヶ月の展示期間の最終盤、トークショー開催日というグッドタイミング。
素晴らしい写真と素晴らしいゲストの顔ぶれに、彼の実力を存分に感じ取った。
2014年に女優の杉本彩さんが、動物愛護の施策を公的に啓蒙する目的で、
「公益財団法人動物環境・福祉協会EVA（エヴァ）」を立ち上げた。
活動の資金集めのために、団体のカレンダーを制作する時に名乗りを上げたのが、
当時、米国をベースに活動する写真家HIRO EDWARD SATO氏だった。
写真に興味のある人なら誰でも憧れるライカのカメラで撮影された美しい写真。
動物たちと空間を共にする杉本さんの優しい表情と美しい光が織りなす世界観。
気まぐれな動物たちの一瞬の表情をとらえる自然な呼吸合わせ、
光と影のバランスが、モノクロームの世界に優しいリズムを生み出している。
写真の技術や知識がなくても、そのメッセージを十二分に受け取ることができた。
まさに「百聞は一見に如かず」。
ミュージックビデオやコマーシャル映像を得意とすると聞いていたけれど、
魂を揺さぶるようなポートレイトの数々に、新鮮な驚きを得た。
イギリス生まれ、アメリカ育ち、45年間海外暮らしだったHIRO氏は、
昨年からその活動の拠点を日本に移した。
外の世界をたくさん知っている彼が撮る日本は、どこまでも美しいに違いない。
A photographer friend of mine whom I met in the U.S. was holding a solo exhibition at Ginza Six.
Since I didn't get many chances to see him in action, I dropped by as if to visit him in his campaign.

Even without photographic skills or knowledge of photography, I could more than adequately receive the message.

I had heard that his specialty was music videos and commercial images,
I was pleasantly surprised by his soul-stirring portraits.
Born in England and raised in the U.S., Hiro has lived abroad for 45 years.
He moved his base of activities to Japan last year.
He knows a lot about the outside world, and the Japan he photographs must be endlessly beautiful.
