光琳の社長、川野作織さん。
彼女のストーリーを初めてお聞きしたのは、もう何年前のことだろうか。
ニューヨークのみならず、全米の飲食業界で、彼女のことを知らない人はいない。
1978年に渡米、日本食レストランで働いた経験を活かし、1982年に「KORINを設立。
2,000ドルで仕入れた５カートンの有田焼を携えて、その名の通り「行商」して歩いた。
当初はアメリカ人にその品質の良さがなかなか伝わらず、苦労も多かったが、
自身の発想とそのホスピタリティーで、徐々に顧客リストが増えていった。
アメリカの丈夫で厚い包丁では、日本食の繊細な料理はできないと、
足を使ってデモンストレーション、日本食と日本文化への理解を促し、ファンを増幅させた。
今や、世界中の有名シェフから愛される「日本の食器と包丁」のレジェンドが、
トライベッカに拠点を置くこの「KORIN」であることを、日本の皆さんにもお伝えしたい。
1991年湾岸戦争、2001年米国同時多発テロ事件、2008年リーマンショック、
そして2020年のコロナ禍。
「人生は、一難去って、また一難」という作織さんの座右の銘の通り、
「10年ごとに何かが起こる」ニューヨークだからこそ、兜の緒を緩めることはできない。

常に冷静で厳しい目で人間を見抜く力と、その奥にある溢れんばかりの愛情に、
私は作織さんへの敬意が次から次へと止まらない。
今ニューヨークで活躍している友人らの大部分が、その苦労時代に作織さんに
お世話になり、彼女の的確なアドバイスのお陰だと口を揃えて申す。
今の私はまだまだ修行中だけれど、作織さんの力強い応援が何よりの糧。
いつか恩返しできるように、日々精進するのみです。

I greatly respect Ms. Saori's ability to always see through people with a calm and severe eye and the overflowing love behind it all.
Most of my now active friends in New York were under her care during their difficult times.
And they all say that it is thanks to her precise advice.
I am still in the midst of my training, but Saori's strong support is the best food for my soul.
I will devote myself to it daily to repay her kindness someday.
