航空会社を辞めた後、よく聞かれた質問のひとつが
「引退しても、飛行機に安く乗れるのでしょう？」というものだった。
答えは明白、「Nothing」である。
退職したら、何も残らない。
一般客として、格安チケットを探して、満席のエコノミー席に詰め込まれる。
航空会社を選ぶ基準は、特にない。
マイレージを貯めている会社に乗る機会が多くなることは確かだけれど。
コロナ禍、日米往復の際、ANAによく乗った。
エコノミー席でもガラガラだったから、少しでも安いチケットを探した結果だった。
マイレージを駆使して、この路線では初めてのビジネスクラスに乗った。
ずっと空席待ちだったけれど、直前にアップグレード可能の連絡をいただいた。
現役時代には裏方を知り尽くしていたけれど、サービスを受ける側になるのは新鮮な体験。
ANAのビジネスクラスは、機首に向かって後ろ向き座席というのがある。
興味はあったけれど、心理的に通常の前向き座席をリクエストした。
コロナ禍や円安の影響か、乗務員の数が少なく、サービスに時間がかかる。
それでもこのゆったりした空間だから、気長に待つことに何の抵抗もない。
日本発の食事はどれも美味しかったし、居心地の良い座席であっという間のフライト。
乗務員の表情や手の動きを眺めながら、いまだ現役で活躍している同期のことを想う。
いつでも「人から見られる職業」に就いている人は、輝いているなぁと反省しきり。
帰宅したら、大量の洗濯物と掃除が待っている。
それが、私の役割。
One of the questions I was often asked after I left the airline industry was
"Will you still be able to fly cheaply after you retire?"
The answer is obvious: "Nothing."
Once we retire, we will have nothing left.
As regular passengers, we are crammed into a packed economy seat, looking for a cheap ticket.
I have no particular criteria for choosing an airline.
I am sure that I will have more opportunities to fly with companies that I have frequent flyer miles.
I often flew ANA to and from Japan and the U.S. during the COVID-19 pandemic.
I was looking for the cheapest ticket because the economy seats were vacant.
I used my frequent flyer miles and flew business class for the first time on this route.
I had been waiting for an empty seat for a long time, but I got a last-minute call that I could upgrade.
Although I learned all about the backstage during my working years, it was a new experience to be on the receiving end of the service.
In ANA's business class, there is a type of seat that faces backward toward the nose of the plane.
I was curious about this but psychologically requested a regular forward-facing seat.
Perhaps due to the COVID-19 pandemic or the weak yen, there were fewer crew members, and service took longer.
Still, this spaciousness made me feel comfortable waiting patiently.
All meals from Japan were delicious, and the flight went by quickly with comfortable seats.
As I watch the crew's facial expressions and hand movements, I think about my still active peers in the industry.
I think people who work in "a profession that is always seen by others" are always shining.
When I get home, a lot of laundry and cleaning awaits me.
That's my role.
