長女千璃がアップステートで寮生活を送るようになってから、
彼女の学校のある街で、クリスマスツリーを購入するのが我が家の慣習となった。
娘が育つ同じ土地で成長したツリーが、娘との繋がりを感じさせてくれるから。
生のツリーにはそれぞれ表情があり、枝のつき方やその量などが、千差万別。
田舎街の直販店では、すでに伐採された切り株から選ぶこともできるし、
気に入った形がない場合は、ノコギリを持って森に入ることもできる。
毎年サンクスギビングの前後から販売が始まるけれど、今年は出遅れた。
シェイプの良いツリーを探したら、天井につっかえるほど巨大なものだった。
星の先は傾き、表側しかドレスアップしていないけれど、
こんなちぐはぐな感じが、まさに我が家を象徴しているかのよう。

Sales start around Thanksgiving every year, but we were late to buy this year.
We looked for a tree in good shape, but it was so huge that it was stuck to the ceiling.
The stars were tilted at the ends, and only the front side was dressed up.
This kind of paradox seems to be the very symbol of our house.
