久しぶりに戻ったニューヨークは、すっかり寒くなっていて、
街はダウンジャケットを着た人々で溢れていた。
韓国・梨泰院の凄惨な圧死事故や、東京・渋谷の規制ニュースなどを聞いていると、
ハロウィンはいったい誰のためのものだろうと考える。
ニューヨークの街は、すっかりコロナ禍前と同じように戻っている。
人々はマスクを外し、自由に動き、人と交流する。
子供たちが元気に「Trick or Treat」と声に出して歩き回る姿を、
大人たちは後ろからそっと見守っている。
本来あるべき姿は、きっとここにあるのかもしれない。

It's been a long time since I returned to New York City, and it's gotten freezing.
The streets were filled with people wearing down jackets.
Listening to the news about the horrific crushing death of people in Itaewon, South Korea, and the restrictions in Shibuya, Tokyo, I wondered who Halloween was for.
The streets of New York City are back to how they were before the COVID-19 pandemic.
People take off their masks, move freely, and interact with others.
Children cheerfully say "Trick or Treat" while adults quietly watch from behind.
Perhaps this is what Halloween should be about.
