マンハッタン島を東京都と比較すると、「杉並区１つ分」、
もしくは「足立区と世田谷区を合わせた分」、と言われる。
およそ東京都の７分の１というと、イメージしやすいだろうか。
東京都の人口約1400万人に対して、マンハッタンの人口約160万人。
数字統計からすると、東京都の方が人口密度が高いと算出されるけれど、
実際のマンハッタンの密集ぶりは、ここに来たことがある人には明白だろう。
そんなマンハッタン内にも、大学が数多く存在していて、
地図には見えないけれど、意外と大きなキャンバスがあって驚くことも多い。
フォーダム大学は、眞子様の結婚相手の一件で、日本でも知名度が上がったけれど、
カトリック系の富裕層が多く通い、特に法学部では逸材を排していることでも有名。
マンハッタン内にあるキャンパスは、以前訪れたことがあったけれど、
ブロンクス校に訪れる機会は初めてで、その施設の充実ぶりに驚いた。
緑溢れるキャンパスに、各種競技用のフィールドと新旧の建物が散在する。
夏の日差しの中、芝生に足を投げ出して読書する学生の姿に、心地よい嫉妬。
若さというエネルギーがもたらす力に圧倒される。
過去には戻れない悔しさよりも、若者の未来に期待を抱くことが、
「歳を取った」ということなのかもしれない。

When Manhattan Island is compared to Tokyo, it is said to be "the size of one Suginami ward" or "the equivalent of Adachi and Setagaya wards combined."
It will be easier to visualize if we say that Manhattan Island is about one-seventh the size of Tokyo.
The population of Manhattan is approximately 1.6 million compared to Tokyo's population of 14 million.
The numerical statistics suggest that Tokyo is more densely populated than Manhattan.
However, the actual density of Manhattan is evident to anyone who has been here.
Even within Manhattan, there are many universities and colleges.
Although not visible on a map, they often surprise us with their large canvases.
Fordham University has become well known in Japan because of the marriage of Princess Mako.
But it has about 200 years of history. It is famous for the large number of wealthy Catholics who attend the university and its law school, which is mainly well known for its outstanding students.
I had visited the campus in Manhattan before, but this was my first time to visit the Bronx campus, and I was surprised by its excellent facilities.
The campus is lush and green, with various athletic fields and old and new buildings.
I was pleasantly jealous of the sight of students reading with their feet out on the grass in the summer sun.
I am overwhelmed by the power of the energy of youth.
Rather than a sense of regret at not being able to return to the past, I find myself looking forward to the future of the young.
I am getting older.
