人類のるつぼ、ニューヨークでは、たくさんの食事に出会う。

宗教上の理由、健康上の理由、単に嗜好だけという理由もある。

 

教典で許されているものだけを食するハラル(イスラム教)とコーシャー(ユダヤ教)は、

それぞれ専門のスーパーマーケットがあるほど、メジャーな食事。

 

卵や乳製品(たまに魚)を食するベジタリアン(菜食主義)から一歩進んで、

動物性食品は一切含まないビーガン(完全菜食主義)のお店も倍増している。

 

その他、アレルゲン除去食、糖尿病治療食、低カロリー食など、

それでも食べる楽しみを提供したいというお店側の姿勢が素晴らしい。

前職時代、機内で提供できる特別食についてたくさん学んだけれど、

実際にそれを試す機会というのは、ほとんどなかった。

 

最近、日本発の特別食が美味しいという噂を聞いて、グルテンフリーミールをリクエスト。

よく見ると、食前に提供されるおつまみ(煎餅)もハラル認証を受けている。

 

日本の多様性も進化しているのだと、なんだか嬉しい。

 

(ただし、外地発のそれは、驚くほど不味い場合も多々あって、あまりお薦めできません。)

 

 



In New York, the melting pot of humanity, one encounters many meals.
Some for religious reasons, some for health reasons, and some simply because of taste.

Halal (Muslim) and Kosher (Jewish) foods, where one eats only permitted food in the scriptures, are the most common.
Each is such a significant diet that there are supermarkets specializing in each.

Vegetarian (Vegetarianism), which includes eggs and dairy products (and occasionally fish), is moving one step further.
The number of vegans (completely vegetarian) stores, which do not include animal products, has doubled.

Other diets include allergen-free diets, diabetic diets, low-calorie diets, etc.
Still, it is terrific that the restaurants are willing to offer the pleasure of eating.

I learned a lot about the special meals that can be served in flight in my previous career.
But there were very few opportunities actually to try them out.

Recently, I heard a rumor that a special meal from Japan was delicious, so I requested a gluten-free meal.
Upon closer inspection, I found that the snacks (rice crackers) served before the meal were also certified halal.

I was somewhat pleased to see that diversity in Japan is also evolving.

(However, I do not recommend asking for special meals outside of Japan, as they are often surprisingly tasteless.)
