What does it mean to be a good daughter?
The first thing I thought after Seri’s birth had been, I’m sorry, Mom and Dad, that I couldn’t give you the granddaughter you dreamed of. I’m such a bad daughter.
From the bottom of my heart, I desperately wanted them to help me, but no matter what, I couldn’t seem to tell them outright.
It must have broken their hearts to send the daughter they raised with love and care off to live in New York, a distant land half a world away.
Yet somehow, I couldn’t speak the words I was thinking: I want to go home.
As Seri’s parents, we had to protect her and we had to take responsibility for her all our lives.
Though I felt that I let my parents down by not giving birth to the baby they had expected, I thought that if I could take responsibility for myself, for my own choice to emigrate to America, then I might be able to make up for some of it.
I couldn’t let myself rely on my parents, coercing them to spend their elder years handling their granddaughter’s care.
I realized that the best thing I could do as their daughter was to become independent.
Somewhere in my heart, I could feel that I was waiting for either one of them to say, “Come back with us to Japan.” But maybe, my parents had decided to watch over me from afar in the meantime.
I knew that they were ready to help at a moment’s notice, but for the time being had chosen to stay one step back.
