I was at a loss for where to go when a man perhaps in his mid-thirties called out to me, “It’s a bit bumpy, but you can probably get through quicker this way.”
The next moment, he grabbed the front of the stroller and guided us.
I felt such relief.
Then I noticed that the hand he used to push us through the crowd appeared hard and cold…
It was a prosthetic hand.
Seeing him struggle as he guided my stroller through the crowd with his disability,
I felt tears well up in my eyes.
Having a disability allows you perceive other people’s pain, to have courage, to be kind, to be strong. I grasped something of the man’s impulse to help us. It felt as if Heaven was protecting Seri and me, and had also taught me this basic lesson I desperately needed.
Thanks to the man’s guidance, we finally reached the road.
I wanted to call my friend who was waiting for us, but my cell phone wasn’t getting service.
All the traffic signals were out, and both cars and pedestrians were in a state of anarchy.
