両眼性無眼球症（全盲）とたくさんの障害を持って生まれた娘を育てながら、日米の架け橋となるべく東奔西走しています。
暗闇の中を手探りで歩いてきた当時の経験から、周囲に「助けて」と言える社会づくりを目指した活動を行っています。

無眼球の原因はともかく、私たちには緊急の課題があった。
目は「見る」という行為によって発達する。
眼球の周りにある小さな筋肉が、骨格の発達を促す。
すなわち、眼球が発達しないと、目の周りの骨も発達しない。
そのままにしておくと、成長しない骨格の影響で、顔にも歪みが生じてしまうのだ。
そこで医師からは、なるべく早い時期から義眼を装着するようにと勧められた。
しかし、両方のまぶたを固くぎゅっと閉じたままの千璃の目には、当初義眼を入れるスペースがまったくないように見えた。
鼻の中心にあるはずの骨が見当たらず、小鼻が欠けて、鼻の穴の形が異常な状態だった。
どの程度の外科的治療が可能なのか、まったく見当がつかなかった。
NICUに入院中の頃から、医師やナースから、何度も繰り返して告げられていた。
「視力だけはどうにもならないが、義眼や鼻の再建など、美容的な問題はといったコスメティックな問題は、いずれきちんと治療出来るでしょう」
確かに形成外科・整形医療の発達目覚ましい現代で、特に外見重視の米国・ニューヨークにいるのだから、きっと優秀なドクターに出会えるに違いないという漠然とした思いはあった。
が、成長し続ける子供の顔にメスを入れるとなると、成人するまでに何度の補正手術を繰り返すことになるのだろうか、
費用はどのくらいかかるのだろうか。
手術の時期はいつ頃になるのだろうか。
それが彼女の人生にどう影響していくのだろうか。
様々な不安が頭をよぎっていた。
Regardless of the cause, however, there was another pressing issue to address.
Eyes develop through the act of seeing.
The tiny muscles around the eyeballs promote the development of the bone structure. Therefore, if the eyeballs don’t develop, the bones around the eyes won’t develop either.
Without appropriate treatment, those bones will not be able to form along with the rest of the body, so the facial structure will be warped.
Thus, the doctor recommended we outfit Seri with artificial eyes as soon as possible.
This was easier said than done, though, as Seri’s eyelids were sealed tight and there seemed to be no space for artificial eyes.
To make matters worse, the bone that should have supported the center of her nose was missing, and her nostrils were abnormally shaped.
I had no idea what kind of surgeries would even be possible.
The NICU doctors and nurses had repeated over and over again: “Nothing can be done about her eyesight, but eventually, you may be able to treat cosmetic aspects by using artificial eyes and reconstructing her nose.”
I’m not sure why, but I felt confident that in today’s world of advanced facial reconstruction and cosmetic surgery, and being in a big city like New York, we would be able to find a highly skilled doctor to take on Seri’s case.
The problem was that by putting Seri under the knife at such a young age, she would be subject to further reconstructive surgeries down the line as her bones continued to grow until adulthood.
How much would all of that cost?
How often would she have to go under the knife?
How would this affect the course of other events in her life?
