今から7-8年前、日本の友人家族の米国移住計画を相談されたことがあった。
御主人の事業の海外展開、子ども達の教育環境を考えて、
生活の拠点を米国に移したいというものだった。
いくつかの都市が候補にあがったけれど、最終的に選んだのはハワイ州で、
ご家族は暖かい南国での生活をスタートされた。
当時12歳だった長女ちゃん、いきなりの英語環境は不安だったに違いない。
昨年、17歳になった彼女が、ニューヨークの大学を受験したいとやって来た。
そして先月、大学で演劇を専攻している彼女が、舞台を観に来て欲しいと。
気軽な気持ちで行って驚いたことに、1年生の彼女が主役の舞台だった。
シェイクスピアの本に出てくるキャラクターを現実に引き出す魔術を使い、
パラレルワールドで展開されるストーリーの中心にいる女性主人公。
２時間以上の大舞台で、プロ並みの実力者の中で堂々と演技する彼女の姿に、
身内としてだけでなく、日本人としての誇りを抱かずにはいられなかった。
世界の舞台で活躍する日本人若者の姿を、しっかりと目に焼き付けておきたい。

Seven to eight years ago, I had been consulted about a Japanese friend's family plan to move to the United States.
Considering her husband's business overseas development and children's educational environment,
they wanted to move their life base to the United States.
Although some cities were nominated, the final choice was Hawaii.
The family started living in a warm tropical country.
The eldest daughter, who was 12 at the time, must have been worried about her sudden English environment.
Last year, she turned 17, and came to study for a college in New York.
And she asked me to come to see the stage last month, she was majoring in theater at university.
Surprisingly, even though she was a freshman, and she was the starring stage.
Using magic to bring out characters from Shakespeare's books into reality,
The female hero at the center of the story played in the parallel world.
On a big stage of more than 2 hours, her figure acting dignifiedly among professionals,
I was very proud of her as Japanese as well as my close family.
I am impressed Japanese young people who are active on the world stage.
