キング牧師（マーティン・ルーサー・キング・ジュニア）の名前を初めて知ったのは、中学社会の教科書だったと記憶している。
アメリカにおける黒人差別の反対運動に貢献したといっても、ピンとこなかった。
1963年８月28日、ワシントン大行進が行われるなか、キング牧師がリンカーン記念堂前で人種差別の撤廃と各人種の協和を呼びかけ、有名な演説を唱えた。
「I have a dream.」（私には夢がある。）
歴史を変えたこの言葉、この演説の重みをしみじみと考える。
1968年にキング牧師が暗殺され非業の死を遂げてから40年で、アフリカ系アメリカ人初のバラク・オバマ氏が大統領に就任するとは、当時の誰が予測しただろうか。
ミシェル・オバマ夫人にいたっては、黒人奴隷の子孫でもある。
キング牧師の演説から50年を記念して、８月最後の週末、ワシントンDCの街はお祭りムード一色だった。
全米各地から集まってきたアフリカ系黒人集団が街を埋め尽くす。
「40代を過ぎると人生の満足度が増える」と世間では言われるけれど、それは同時に夢を諦めることで今ある幸せに満足するからともいわれている。
でも、世界を動かしたあの言葉こそが、明日を生きるためのモチベーションに繋がるのかもしれない。
「I have a dream.」
幼い頃に思い描いていた夢を、もう一度思い出してみよう。
どんな小さな夢だって、具体的に行動すればきっと手が届くと信じたい。
It was in a textbook of middle school society that I first learned the name
of Martin Luther King, Jr.
To say that he had contributed to the campaign against Jim Crow in the
United States, I did not have any idea.
While the march on Washington was carried out on August 28th in 1963,
Dr. King made the famous speech for harmony of each race and the
elimination of racial discrimination in front of the Lincoln Memorial Dome.
"I have a dream."
I think again the meaning of the words and speech that changed the
world's history.
Martin Luther King was assassinated in 196 , it was the violent death.
At that time, who had predicted that after 40 years, African-American's
Barack Obama becomes US's president?
How about the first lady?
Mr. Michelle Obama leads to a descendant of black slaves.
To commemorate 50 years from the speech of Martin Luther King, the
city of Washington DC was filled with a festive mood on the last
weekend of August.
Black African-American population that has been gathered from
across the United States filled the town.
It is said that "the life satisfaction increases after the 40's."
It is also said at the same time that "to give up the dream leads to be
satisfied by present happy."
But, those words that moved the world, may lead to motivation to live
tomorrow.
"I have a dream."
Let us remember the dream that was envisioned at an early age.
Even what little dream, I believe we surely reach the dream if we make
concrete actions.
