アップタウンに引っ越してきて、ずいぶん長い年月が経過した。
その頃からずっと、セカンドアベニューは工事をしていて、
付近の飲食店やアパートは、いつも囲い壁の向こうにあるイメージだった。
そのヴェールが剥がされて、ようやく地下鉄が開通した。
計画当初は、北96丁目からそのまま国連まで一気に行けるはずだったが、
30ブロック程度でクロスタウンする路線と合流していく。
ニューヨークでは、他にもまだ建設中の地下鉄路線がいくつかある。
すでに完成された都市に、地下網を後から掘り下げていくことで、
また新しいマンハッタンの地形が出来上がる。
世界の中心はいつだって、新しい変化を受け入れる街なのだ。
