ニューヨークに来て間もない頃、この街に馴染めずに、何度も涙した。
人も文化も刺激的だったし、少しずつ友達も増えていったのに、
どこか孤独で、どこか満たされない、空虚な気持ちがつきまとっていた。
みんな異人種で、みんな「仮住まい」に身を寄せて、日々を過ごす。
「人類のるつぼ」と呼ばれる街だから、ここにいる誰しもがきっと、
少なからず同じような気持ちを抱えて生きているのかもしれない。
そんな空虚な気持ちの隙間を埋めるのには、胃袋を満たすのが一番だった。
同郷の仲間と一緒に、故郷の味を探して、郷里の話で盛り上がる。
胃袋が温まると、心も温かくなり、また明日から頑張ろうと思い直す。
ソーホーより北側、若者が集うワシントン広場の近くに、
当時の「牛若丸」があって、ゲイの友人に誘われて行ったのが最初だった。
ネタもシャリも大きめで、いつもアメリカ人が行列を作っていた。
チェルシー地区と呼ばれる現在の場所に引っ越してからも、
常連は現地の人だらけで、日系人に出くわすことは滅多にない。
「日本の味」は、今や「世界の味」になり、世界の人の胃袋を満たしている。
そんな光景を見ながら、改めて自分が歳を重ねてきた歴史を顧みる。
When I first came to New York, I didn't get used to the city and I cried many times.
The people and culture were exciting, and I got friends little by little.
But somewhat lonely, somewhere unsatisfied, there was an empty feeling.
Everyone is interracial and everyone spends their days living in “temporary home”.
Because it is a city called "Human Crucible", everyone here must be living with the same feelings.
Filling the stomach was the best way to fill such empty feelings.
Along with friends from the same town, we searched for the taste of hometown and were excited about Japanese theme.
When the stomach was warmed up, my heart was warmed up, and I thought I would try again from tomorrow.
At the north of Soho, near Washington Square where young people gather,
There was Sushi restaurant “Ushiwakamaru” at the time.
I was invited by a gay friend to go there at the first time.
The sashimi and shari(rice) were large, and many Americans always made a line.
Even after their moving to the current location called Chelsea,
Regulars are full of local people and rarely encounter Japanese people.
“Japanese taste” is now “World taste” and fills the stomachs of the world.
While looking at such a scene, I look back on the history that I have been aged.
