雛人形は、母方の両親が孫のために贈るのが通例とされている。
海外での出産と子育てに何も援助ができないからと、
我が家には、まず夫の実家から雛人形が送られてきた。
その後も、男児には五月人形、女児には雛人形。
マンハッタンの狭いアパートには、飾れるようなスペースがなくて、
箱から出して愛でることもできないまま、納戸の奥で時を経ている。
今年は小さな雛人形だけを出して、桃の節句を祝った。
手巻き寿司と桜餅しか用意できなかったけれど、
日本の伝統行事を、子供たちが少しでも覚えていてくれますように。
Hina dolls are usually given as a gift by the mother's parents for their grandchildren.
My husband's parents sent the dolls to our house first because they could not provide any assistance for their child's birth and upbringing overseas.
After that, they sent four sets of dolls, May dolls for the boys and Hina dolls for the girls.
In our small apartment in Manhattan, we don't have enough space to display them.
The dolls have been put in the back of a closet without taking them out of the box and admiring them.
This year, we celebrated Momo no Sekku with only the small dolls.
Though all I could prepare was hand-rolled sushi and sakura mochi,
I hope that my children will remember this traditional Japanese event.
