2020年３月1日から、ニューヨーク州ではレジ袋の使用が禁止になった。
英語では「プラスチックバッグ」。
世界中で「海洋プラスチックゴミ」が問題になっている昨今、
ニューヨーク州がついに条例を制定したことに、世界が注目している。
ニューヨーク市内の地下鉄では、この数ヶ月ずっとポスターが貼られ、
３月１日からの告知アナウンスが実施されていたけれど、
人々の関心度は、どのほどのものだったのか。
直前に、州政府が罰金の徴収は４月１日まで待つと改訂したこともあって、
３月初日の日曜日、街中でそれほどの混乱は見られなかったようだ。
在庫を持つマンハッタンの店舗では、いまだにレジ袋を配布していた一方で、
アップステートのスーパーマーケットからは、一切のレジ袋が消えていた。
マイバッグを持たない市民は、５セントで紙袋を購入するしかない。
意地でも紙袋は要らないと言い張る人がレジ係と言い合いになって、
いつもよりずっと長い行列にヤジを飛ばす人もあり。
しばらくは混乱もあるだろうが、
カリフォルニア州での実施で70パーセントのレジ袋が消えたという実例に対し、
ニューヨーク州は、どのような成果を発揮していくのだろうか。
100年後、1000年後の地球が、美しくありますように。
