父の実家は、大阪でメリヤス工場を営んでいる。
明治生まれの祖母が、まだ現役でミシンを踏んでいた頃に、
彼女が大切にしていた糸切りバサミを譲ってくれた。
「ハサミだけは、よう切れんとあかん」
祖母が他界した今でも、いまでも形見として私の側にある。
今ではアパレル企業のほとんどが、その下請けを海外に託している。
何度窮地に陥っても、実家の工場が会社を畳まないのは、
きっと日本人にしかできない手先の仕事があるからだと思う。

弁護士・伊藤和子先生の御著書には、ユニクロをはじめとした
ファストファッションの下請け工場の労働実態が赤裸々に記されている。
バングラデシュやカンボジアの工場で何が起こっているのか。
劣悪な環境の中で低賃金の長時間労働を強いられる自国民に対し、
国政府として何も対処ができないという不甲斐なさ。
ファストファッションに限らず、高級ブランドでも同様の問題があるし、
アパレル業界に限らず、日本国内で働く技能実習生の実態は酷い。
近年、人々が口にする「エシカル消費」とは、
人と社会環境、地球のことを考えて作られた商品を消費することだけれど、
消費者側としては、より安く、より良い品質の物を購入したいのが当然。
だからこそせめて、自分の手元に届くまでのストーリーを知ってほしい。
伊藤先生の想いが胸に響く、意義深い講演だった。
