アズレージョ

北山にある石井春さんのアトリエ兼自宅を訪れたのは、京都の街全体が祇園祭に向けて彩り始めた頃だった。

学生時代に学んだイスラムのモザイク技術を彷彿させる「アズレージョ」は、ポルトガル由来のタイルアート。
アラビア語で「青（アズール）」と「滑らかに磨かれた小さな石(アズレーシャ)」を意味する。
しかし春さんのそれは、伝統的な青と白ではなく、自由で猛々しい色をはなっている。

昭和建築の京都の家も、アトリエに並ぶ数々の調度品も、すべて春さんの息吹がかかり、凛としてそこにあった。
まるで20年来の友人に語るように、惜しげもなく御自身の生い立ちやアートへの想いを聞かせて下さる姿勢に、思い切りの良い彼女の生き様を垣間見た気がした。
そしてその潔さがそのまま作品に反映されているのだと知った。

数十時間の工程を経て、艶やかな色を放ったタイルが窯から焼き上げってくるシーンを思うと、心地よい緊張感が走る。
海や魚など、水のシーンが良く似合うのは、東京生まれの春さんが、あえて山に囲まれた京都で暮らした結果、生まれてくるものかもしれない。

今度は紅葉の美しい季節に、彼女の好きなポートワインを携えて再訪してみよう。
そしてマンハッタンにひとつ、あのタイルを持ち帰る。
無機質な街角に、癒しと憩いをもたらす魅力がきっと、世界中の人の心に伝わるように。

When I visited the studio & home of Haru Ishii in Kitayama, the city of Kyoto
had started to prepare for Gion Festival.

"Azulejos" is tile art from Portugal that reminiscent of the mosaic
technique of Islam learned in school days.
It means " blue ( Azure ) " and " small polished stone smoothly
(Azuresha ) " in the Arabic .
But Haru's works are rather ferocious freedom color, than the blue and
white traditional.

Kyoto house of Showa architecture and many arranged furniture in the
studio were there with dignified; all they were customized by her.
Haru told me her upbringing without regret, and her feeling of Art, in
attitude so that she talks to a friend of 20 years.
I felt I glimpse a way of life of her good on her character.
And I knew her certain graciousness has been reflected in the work as it
was.

I felt my comfortable tension when I imagine a scene that tile, through the
steps of several tens of hours, come from the stone oven with vivid color
and luster.
Haru was born in Tokyo, but lives in Kyoto where is surrounded by
mountains dare.
It might be one reason that her works match well with such as fish and
sea, water scene.

Let me re-visit having her favorite port wine in the beautiful seasons of
autumn leaves.
And I will bring back her works to Manhattan, New York.
We will surely work together on the street corner of mineral matter to
bring relaxation and healing to reach the hearts of people around the world.
