「ビジネス界のオスカー」と称される「スティービー賞」は、
ギリシア語の「冠を戴いた」という意味に由来する。
60カ国以上、4,000以上の企業、団体、個人が、
様々な部門にノミネートされる。
中でも「全米ビジネス大賞」「国際ビジネス大賞」「ビジネス女性大賞」
「セールス＆カスタマーサービス大賞」の４大部門は、
世界中のビジネス界が注目するビッグアワード。
従姉に授賞式に代理出席するよう依頼されたのが、つい半月前。
取り急ぎ、エスコートしてくれる男性を探し、スピーチを考えていた。
それほど大きな賞だとは知る由もなかった。
直前に、本人がスケジュール調整してNY入りすることになって初めて、
私はことの大きさに気が付いた。

会場は、マンハッタン、タイムズスクウェアにあるマリオットマーキーズホテル。
華やかに着飾った女性達が600名以上集う夜、表彰式の様子は全世界にライブ中継された。
白地に紅葉と竹を描いた着物姿が、レッドカーペットを飾った。
「女性が経営する企業」金賞と、「活躍する女性」銀賞のダブル受賞。
日本人女性としては初めての快挙に、世界中が注目した。
生まれた時からずっと、私にとっては姉同然の存在だけれど、
彼女の軌跡が、日本人女性のホープになるであろうと期待する。
ここからまたきっと、女性史も新しい世界に向かっていくのだろう。

The "Stevie Awards" which is called "Oscar of business world", comes
from the Greek word "crowned".
More than 4,000 companies, organizations and individuals in more than
60 countries, are nominated to various departments.
Among them, the four major divisions, "National Business Award", "International
Business Award", "Women in Business Award", and "Sales & Customer Service
Award", are big awards that are paid attention by worldwide business.
It was only half a month ago that my cousin asked me to attend the awards ceremony.
I was hurried, looking for a man who escort me, and thinking for a speech.
I never knew that it was such a big award.
Just before my cousin adjusted the schedule and entered NY,
I noticed the situation was serious.

The venue was Marriott Marquise Hotel in Manhattan, Times Square.
On the night when more than 600 women gorgeously dressed, the awards
ceremony was live broadcasted to the whole world.
A kimono figure depicting autumn leaves and bamboo on a white background
decorated a red carpet.
She got the gold award of "Woman-run Workplace of the year" and silver award
of Women Executive of the year."
For the first time as a Japanese woman, she was taken notice by the world.
From my birth of all my life, she has been close as my elder sister,
I expect that her trajectory will be a hope of a Japanese woman.
From this stage, surely the history of women will head to the new world.

I'm Etsuko Tsugihara, Founder and President of "Sunny Side Up."
I’m truly honored to be accepting this award.
I started my company when I was 17 years old, and we just celebrated
32 years this year!
You know, the Japanese culture is quite challenging for women.
In fact, female presidents are less than 1% of the 3000 companies listed
on the Japanese stock market.
As for female founders, I haven’t herd of any.
So, I hope this award will help to change the future of Japanese business women.
