友人家族と連れ立って、アップルピッキングに出かけた。
マンハッタンから北西に車で90分ほどの、マスカーオーチャード。
このところ、ニューヨークは一気に秋が深まっている。
この日のアップステートの最低気温は、摂氏２度。
それでも、コロナ禍で郊外のレジャーを求めている人々で、
オーチャードは大混雑していた。
その場でリンゴをかじって、ピクニックをするだけであれば、入場料も不要。
農場を出る時に、持ち出しのリンゴは一袋31ドル95セントを支払う。
市場に出回るほどの美味しいリンゴは期待できないかなと、
ふた家族で一袋分だけリンゴを摘んだけれど、それでもかなりの重さだった。
翌朝からせっせとリンゴを煮詰めて、お菓子作りに精を出す。
普段はスイートホームには程遠い我が家も、期間限定の甘い香りが漂っている。

I wondered if we could expect apples to be good enough to go to market.
We only picked enough apples of one bag for two families, but they were still quite heavy.
The next morning we started cooking the apples down to make pastries.
We are usually far from a sweet home, but for a limited time only, the sweet smell of apples is wafting through the air.
