1964年、作家や政治家として活動していたスーザン・ソンタグ女史が、
ニューヨークで発表したエッセイ「ノーツ・オン・キャンプ」を
ベースにした展示会が、メトロポリタン美術館で開催された。
この場合の「キャンプ」とは、フランス語の「Se Camper」に由来し、
「挑発的で誇張されたファッション」という意味を示す。
当時、公民権運動、女性解放運動が活発になり、
それまでの常識を外れた奇抜なファッションが流行り出していた。
単に奇抜なだけでなく、そこに知的なウィットや皮肉が入り込み、
社会的メッセージの強いファッションで個性を主張する。
スーザンは「キャンプ」の定義を58の項目にまとめたが、
彼女自身が「キャンプは難解」と記したぐらいに、その奥は深い。
