ピア33からフェリーに乗って約15分。
かつて全米の凶悪犯が収容されていたアルカトラズ連邦刑務所の跡地に到着。
南北戦争の前後から、囚人を収容する監獄となり、
1861年から1963年まで100年間、正式な連邦刑務所として使用されていた。
目の前、たった２キロぐらいの場所に、サンフランシスコの街並みが見える。
簡単に脱獄できそうでも、激しく波打つ冷たい海流のせいで、
向こう岸まで泳いで渡ることは不可能に違いない。
それでも、たくさんの囚人が脱獄劇を繰り広げたという歴史的事実がある。
首から下げた音声ガイドを頼りに、２時間程のツアーが終わる。
かつて囚人だったという男性が、今はアルカトラズのガイドをしている。
ギフトショップでは、彼が書いた本が販売されている。
法律って、何だろう。赦すことって、何だろう。
刑務所跡へのショートトリップは、複雑な思いが残った。
About 15 minutes riding a ferry from Pier 33.
We arrived at the site of the Alcatraz federal prison, where thugs of the United States were once housed.
Before and after the Civil War, it became a prison to accommodate prisoners,

In front of our eyes, we can see the cityscape of San Francisco just away about 2 kilometers.
