実家の父は、動物の生態を見ることが大好きで、
幼少期は、よく動物園に連れて行ってもらった。
多くの動物は昼間に寝てしまうので、
活発な活動の様子を見るなら、早朝か夜間しかない。
朝早く、母が作ったおにぎりを持って、出かけたけれど、
ゾウの「はな子」もサル山も人だかりがすごくて、
あの頃の動物園は、子供にとって非日常の代表格だった。
ウォルト・ディズニー・ワールドのアニマルキングダムでは、
サバンナの様子が、物の見事に再現されている。
アフリカに行かずとも、自然の生態系を体験できる場所に、
世界中からの観光客が押し寄せてくる。
日本のサファリパークでは、草食動物と肉食動物の棲み分けに、
途中でゲートを開閉しながらトラックが進んだ記憶がある。
ディズニーのそれに、どんな仕組みがあるのかは不明だが、
動物達が自由気ままに暮らしているように見えるのは、
やはりここが夢の国、ディズニー・ワールドだからなのだろう。
