Music Under New York (地下の音楽)

ニューヨークの地下鉄駅構内には、音楽が溢れている。
さすがにニューヨークが舞台というだけあって、パフォーマンスはプロ並み。
暗く湿った地下で、心洗われるような歌声、生の音楽が聴こえてくると、思わず足を
止めて聞き入ってしまう。
大都会の喧騒の中で、通勤客が一緒にリズムを取ったり、若者が踊り出したりする姿に、
心が温まることもしばしば。

その昔は自由気ままに演奏されていたパフォーマンスであったが、1987年からMTA
（ニューヨークの交通機関を運営する公益法人）はオーディション制度を導入。
厳しい書類・デモ選考を経て、オーディションに参加できるのは毎年約60組。
音楽のテクニックに加えて、パフォーマンスにニューヨークらしさがあらわれているかも
審査基準になる。
地下鉄の独特の雰囲気、聴衆から受ける刺激を味わいたくて、普段はプロとして活躍して
いるミュージシャンもこのオーディションを受けることもあるというから驚きだ。

最終的に許可証を取得できたのは、これまでの通算で100数十組そこそこというから、
いかにそのハードルが高いかが分かる。
マンハッタン内、約25か所の人通りの多い地下鉄駅やホームでのパフォーマンスは、
MUNY(Music Under New York)プログラムによって細かくスケジュールが立てられており、
ミュージシャン同士の縄張り争いもなく、秩序が保たれている。

生活費をギリギリまで削って過ごした留学時代、地下鉄代をも無駄にできないと
片道45分かけて徒歩で大学に通っていた。
レベルの高い講義についていけず落ち込んで、ひどいホームシックに襲われた時、
地下鉄構内から聞こえる「アベ・マリア」に救われた。

地下鉄で出会った歌声が、誰かの人生を変えることだってあるに違いない。





In New York subway stations are always full by the music.
We say truly the performance is professional since it's in a New York stage.
In the dark and damp basement, singing music, such as raw as they come
hear our heart lay bare, we would listen to stop the foot involuntarily.
In the hustle and bustle of a big city, the commuters take the rhythm
together, or young people began to dance, the heart often gets warm.

Once upon a time it was a performance that had been playing freewheeling,
but MTA (public benefit corporation, which operates the New York
Transportation) has introduced the audition since 1987.
Through a rigorous selection demo document, performers can participate in
the audition each year about 60 sets.
In addition to the technique of music, they will be screening whether they
would suit for　the New York performance or not.
It is a surprise because sometimes professional musicians apply the
audition that they want to enjoy the unique atmosphere of the subway, or
the stimulus received from the audience.

So far, about only 120-130 groups or so ultimately got the permit, so the
hurdle is so high.
The performance at the platform or subway stations, about 25 locations in
busy Manhattan, has been set up the schedule by finely MUNY(Music Under
New York) program.
There are no turf wars between musicians and the order is maintained.

When I studied abroad, I went to the college on foot over 45 minutes in one
way, since I could not afford to take subway to cut off the cost of living.
I depressed not keep up with the high-level lecture, and I was attacked by a
terrible homesickness, but I was saved by hearing the "Ave Maria" from the
underground.

Even the voice that someone met on the subway could change the life of
them.
