かつては銀座の街でネズミを見かけると、一瞬怯んでいた私も、マンハッタンの
地下鉄構内に棲みつく巨大ネズミにも動揺しないほど、度胸がついた。
そして今週になって突然、ダウンタウンのオフィスに向かう通勤路上に巨大ネズミが
出現した。
ネズミのすぐ横に数名の男性陣、反対側には警察官が２名。
何もないけれど、背筋を伸ばされるような緊張感が漂う。
体長は３メートルを超え、鋭い目つきと怖い形相は、幼い頃に見た「くるみ割り人形」の
挿絵を思い起こさせる。
巨大ネズミは建物にお尻を向けずに、真正面から建物の中を睨みこむような向きで
居座っているから、観光客向けの「客寄せ」目的でないことは一目瞭然である。
雇用低迷が続く米国内でも、特にニューヨークの失業率は高い。
