夜中、インド人の友人からの電話で母国の大災害を知った。
「テレビを見て。君の国が大変なことになっている」
米国で放送されていた祖国の映像は、無修正で、悲惨な状況を写し出していた。
翌3月12日、日本で起きた未曾有の災害に対し、
いち早く救助と救援、復興支援を行ったアメリカ軍の「トモダチ作戦」は、
米国で祖国の安否を気遣う我々日系人にもすぐに伝えられてきた。

あれからまもなく10年、当時を振り返るセミナーが開催された。
震災当時、海上自衛隊の横須賀地方総監であった高嶋博視氏と、
米国海軍の第7艦隊司令官であったスコット・ヴァン・バスカーク氏のセッション。
高嶋氏は、横須賀艦隊が東京電力福島第１原発事故に対応した時、
原発下の放射線量と海水の汚染度が不明という苦難の中で、総指揮を取られた。
高嶋氏と連絡を取り合い任務を遂行されたバスカーク氏との対話は、
歴史の教科書に載らない歴史を学ぶ、とても貴重な機会だった。
コロナ禍という未曾有の世界災害が発生した2020年の師走。
この時期、さらなる自然災害が起きた時に、あの教訓を生かせるか。
私たちは市民は、まず「正しく知ること」が何より大事なのだと学んでいる。

In the middle of the night, I learned of Japan's catastrophe through a phone call from an Indian friend.
He said, "Watch the TV. Your country had a terrible disaster."
Footage of my homeland broadcast in the U.S. was uncensored and depicted the dire situation.
The next day, March 12, in response to Japan's unprecedented disaster, The U.S. military started "Operation Tomodachi" to rescue and rebuild assistance.
It has been quickly reported to those living in the United States who care about our country.

Nearly 10 years later, STIMSON, Embassy of Japan in the United States, provided a seminar, a look back at those days.
A session was held by Mr. Hiromi Takashima, who was former Commander of JMSDF(Japan Maritime-Self-Defense Force) Yokosuka Regional District at the time of the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake in March 2011, and Mr. Scott Van Buskirk, who was former Commander of the 7th Fleet of USN(United States’ Navy).
Mr. Takashima said that when the Yokosuka Fleet responded to the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, he took overall command in the midst of the hardship of not knowing the radiation level seawater contamination under the plant.
The dialogue with Mr. Buskirk, who carried out the mission in contact with Mr. Takashima, was a valuable opportunity to learn about the history that is not in the history books.
The year 2020 is the year of the unprecedented global disaster known as the COVID-19 pandemic.
I hope we use that lesson in the event of another natural disaster at this time.
As citizens, we are learning that the first and foremost thing we need to do is know it right.
