映画「ハリーポッター」シリーズの第一作を観たのは、まだ航空会社に勤務していた
頃だった。
外地に到着後、深夜の映画館へ。
上映開始後30分も経たぬ間に、私の意識は遠く彼方へ飛んでいった。
映画館であれほど熟睡したのは先にも後にもあれきりで、一緒に行った連れが驚くほど、
よく寝入ってしまった。
時差ボケや、フライトの疲れもあったかもしれない。
ダンブルドア校長、ホグワーツ、ハーマイオニー、、、片仮名で読んでも覚えられない
名称の数々を、流暢なイギリス英語のセリフと共に聞いているうちに、
睡眠術にかけられたように睡魔に襲われた。
会社でもイギリス英語を使うように教育されていたけれど、幼い頃からアメリカ英語に
慣れ親しんできた私にとって、クイーンズイングリッシュへの苦手意識は強かった。
子供向けの「ハリーポッター」ですら、子守唄に聞こえてしまったショックは大きく、
次第にイギリス英語の映画は、敷居の高いものとなっていた。
数年前に偶然、機内映画で完結編を観た時には、子役だった出演者の成長ぶりと、
そして、自然とイギリス英語を聞いていた自分にも驚いた。
時間が流れるというのは、こういうことなのだと痛感した。
フロリダで遭遇した「ハリーポッター」の世界。
大阪にもそれが出来たというが、やはり演じる役者達には英語を話してほしい。
子供達が読み終わり、書斎で眠っている「ハリーポッター」の原書を、来年は少しずつ
読んでみようかと思う師走の日。
When I watched the movie of the first installment of the "Harry Potter" series,
it was around the time I was still working for the airline.
After I arrived in overseas, I went to the movie theater late-night.
While it was less than 30 minutes after the movie started, my consciousness
flew far away.
My friend was surprised that I was asleep so well at the theater.
There was jet lag, perhaps also tired of flight.
While I was listening the fluent British English dialogue such as Dumbledore,
Hogwarts, Hermione, which I could not remember even in Japanese,
I was sleepy as I was subjected by sleep magic.
I had been trained to use the British English also in the company.
But I was accustomed to American English from an early age.
So my poor awareness of the Queen's English was strong.
I was shocked that even kid's movie "Harry Potter" made me boring.
Gradually, British English movie had become my weak point.
A few years ago, when I saw the final chapter of "Harry Potter" as in-flight
movie, I was surprised by the growth of the performers.
Also I was surprised myself that I was listening to the nature and British English.
I was keenly aware that the time flows through.
I went to the world of the "Harry Potter" in Florida.
I heard that it was also in Osaka, but that world had better to be played in English.
From the next year, I wish I read the original books of the "Harry Potter" that
my kids had already finished reading all.
