世界史に興味を持ったのは、父の影響だった。
ローマ帝国の偉大さも、宗教戦争も、父から習った。
私が物心ついた頃、父は日本の歴史の本ばかり読んでいた。
学生時代に世界史に夢中になって、
日本のことをあまり知らないからだと言っていた。
独身時代最後に、両親を連れてローマに行った。
ローマ市民の広場、フォロ・ロマーノに立った時、
人類の歴史を動かした場所に立てたと喜んでいた。
元老院、凱旋門、神殿。
紀元前からの人類の軌跡を体感できるという感動。
いつの時代も、上から景色を見下ろす場所に住むのは富裕層。
人を見下ろす、見上げるという言葉は、
まさにここから生まれたのだと実感する。
あたたかなローマの日差しを背に受けて、
古き時代に想いを馳せてみる。
