「剣闘士」という言葉を聞いたことはあったけれど、
どんな風に戦うかは想像の域を越えなかった。
帝政ローマの時代、西暦80年に完成。
４万人の奴隷たちを使い、８年がかりで建設された闘技場。
当時、政治的な問題から民衆の意識をそらせるために、
猛獣や奴隷たちを戦わせることが、娯楽であったという。
初めてその映画を観た時は、
冒頭の残虐シーンから、なかなか先に進めなかった。
命を賭けた戦いを観て楽しむ民衆たちを、恐ろしいと思った。
飛行機の中で、もう一度映画を観た。
ラッセル・クロウの迫真の演技に、改めて圧倒された。
いつまでも色褪せない名作。
「コロッセオ」という実在の舞台があったという事実。
人間はどこまでも愚かで、どこまでも賢い。
