初めてそこに行ったのは、19歳の時だった。
西海岸の留学生、なけなしのお金でツアーに行った。
ホームステイ先のママが持たせてくれたランチパックには、
食パンにチーズを挟んだだけのシンプルなサンドイッチと、
ヨーグルトが１つ、申し訳なさそうに並べられていた。
７人乗りの小さなセスナ機で、渓谷を上から眺めた。
体重別に座席を決められて、尾翼前の席は本当によく揺れた。
強風に煽られて機体は左右に傾き、
身体の大きな同級生が青白い顔をして前に座っていた。
アメリカ大陸が壮大すぎて、自分の居場所が見つけられなかった。
きっと大人が仕組んだ社会を、まだ理解できていなかった。
四半世紀ぶりの冒険は、フェニックスから陸路で進んだ。
前日までの曇り空が嘘のように、スカッと晴れた空が心地良い。
目の前に広がる渓谷は、とてつもなく大きな絵画のように映った。
トレイルをひたすら歩いても、景色は永遠に続くようで、
全長300マイル(446km)の巨大さを痛感した。
太陽の傾きで色移りゆく地層の美しさ。
巨大なシーンを作り上げた自然の威力。
人間は、たくさんのギフトをこの地球からもらっている。
この地球に恩返しできる人が、きっと生き残っていくのだろう。
I was 19 years old when I went there for the first time.
I was an international student at the west coast, I went on a tour with
little money.
For the lunch pack that my mother of a homestay made for me,
Simple sandwiches with cheese between bread,
There was one yoghurt lined up as if to be apologetic.
I watched the canyon from the top with a small Cessna aircraft of seven
passengers.
The seat was decided by weight, the seat in front of the tail shook really well.
The aircraft was tilted to the left and right,
A classmate with a big body was sitting in front with a pale face.
The America was too spectacular and I could not find my whereabouts.
I could not understand the society that adults had organized.
The adventure for the first time in quarter of a century, we advanced on the road
from Phoenix.
The cloudy sky up to the previous day was like a lie, the sunny sky was comfortable.
The canyon spreading in front of me was like a tremendously large painting.
Even if we walked on the trail, the scenery seemed to last forever,
I felt a huge 300 miles (446km) in length.
The beauty of the stratum which color shifts due to the inclination of the sun.
The power of nature that created a huge scene.
We get a lot of gifts from this earth.
People who can repay this earth may surely survive.
